Sandy Visits Mr. WoW (And Other Matters)

I am extremely happy to report that I do not have a terribly dramatic tale to tell.

Hurricane Sandy struck Hoboken (and plenty of other places) with brutal force.  But as usual, in Mr. Wow-land, for all my pessimism, cynicism, depressions and fears, B. and I emerged pretty much unscathed.  (Honest, I always feel like a warped Cinderella; just when is midnight  really going to strike?)

Our power was out for six days.  But we still had the gas stove to cook. (B. used to say, “Why do we have so many can of soup on these shelves?”  Now he knows.)   Candles were lit.  I read by flashlight. I think I went through ten books, including a few fave movie-star bios, some thrillers and a bit of Byzantine history.  I watched “Shame” (Michael Fassbender!) and “Rosemary’s Baby” on my DVD player until it ran out of juice.  I took agonizing cold showers.  (Not because of Mr. Fassbender—there was no heat or hot water, and I like to be clean.)

I missed a doctor’s appointment and another trip down to the Department of Labor, where I was supposed to present a log of my job hunt.  Of course I couldn’t make it.  And it was closed anyway.  And I couldn’t claim another week’s check because, obviously the computer was down.  Sooooo…that preyed on my mind dreadfully and is still an issue. (When I got down there finally last week I discovered to my horror that I’d left my passport in my suit jacket, which I’d worn the night before. It’s my only photo ID.  So, back again next week.)

In the dark, despite all attempts to divert myself, I, as usual, internalized this huge event, which I knew was ruining and ending lives, allowing it to drive me into a desperate state of depression.   This was it, this was a sign.  All hope was lost.  My left eye was paining me.  I have to see my dentist.  Maybe I won’t be eligible for further benefits.  I have $9,000 in the bank.  I have wasted and ruined my life.  I should leave B. and set out alone and die on the streets someplace which is what I deserve.  I kept trying to make my head explode.  (Honest, I thought I could do it.)

Even after the storm subsided and I saw the wreckage of the streets and what some of my neighbors suffered in water damage, I couldn’t  rouse myself  from myself.  The darkness at night was driving me crazy.  I was a joy to be with, barely uttering a word to B.  (When I am like this, I feel keeping silent is merciful for him.)   He’s not too crazy about the dark and lack of diversion himself.  So there was a good deal of hibernating.   Two bears slumbering.

I upped all my meds.  There were no afternoon margaritas.  No coffee.  If nothing else, I was having a nice little cleansing.  No appetite. Lost about eight pounds.  The pants I’m wearing right now keep falling off my pert little ass. (I always take stairs two at time—excellent for the legs and rear.)

You all know I’m not religious, tho I’m always ready for a good chat on the subject.  But I surely live under a lucky star. And I’ve always known it, no matter how I might bitch and worry and lacerate myself. (Hmmm…when I get to where I’m going, eventually, won’t I be surprised when He greets me with:  “Ahhh…about that ‘lucky star’ stuff, wanna re-think it?”)

But now I feel as if I live under dozens and dozens of lucky stars.  I do mean all of you.  You overwhelm me.   And when I say I love you, I’m not kidding.  I hope those of you on the east coast didn’t suffer and were much less self-involved than Mr. W.

I’ll ask B. what organization is the best to send donations, and I’ll put in something. The Red Cross probably.  It won’t be a lot, but even if all it gets somebody is a few cans of soup, well, I now know how vital a few cans of soup can be.

Thousands and thousands of people are still without power.  I look at that and I am ashamed I allowed my six days of inconvenience to undo me as it did.

Love,  W.

P.S.  A lot of people were concerned about me.  Several friends from Manhattan even came in with food and water!  (I was thrilled and grateful, but not very welcoming, because of the sloppy condition of our house.  “Don’t let people in!” I yelled at B. as he opened the door.)    Among those concerned was my boss. (I heard about it, somehow.)  I have known and worked with my boss since 1981.  It has always been an intimate environment and relationship.  In an unprofessional person (me) it has not encouraged maturity or a professionalism I can translate to another job. So far.  Sometimes, inevitably, the relationship  was volatile.  I quit in 1999, only to return a year later.  It had been, essentially, the only “real” job I have ever had.

I was extraordinarily touched by my boss’s fear that I had been swept into the Hudson River.   That doesn’t mean I’m not still stunned about being laid off, and given to being swept away with some  free-flowing bile.   But after all these years we are family and I frankly wouldn’t know myself if I wasn’t somehow still involved with Boss.  I guess that’s not really a good thing.  I should have gotten to know myself a long, long time ago.   And maybe it’s not too late.

But for now, I’m still here. And there.  And it’s not the worst place to be.  And even if I get there, I’ll still be here, in some way.  Get it?

Holding a good thought for everyone in my life

Mr. Wow

Just as I was when I voted for Barack Obama four years ago, I did so with a heavy heart.  I did not believe he was going to win. (Of course I was a Hillary man, so that played a part in my reticent attitude.)    I feared a long brutal battle to discredit him in a tight race this year.  You know, sometimes it is better to be pessimistic. Mostly, one is pleasantly surprised.  When I returned from an evening event (just like last year) I was greeted by B. who said, “Obama won!”   To say I was happy and shocked would be a vast understatement.

The first thing I said to B. was, “Oooohhh!  Let’s watch FOX for a minute!”  Everybody looked like they’d just be told their entire families had been murdered.  It was great.  But I didn’t linger.  Even for me, the palpable misery there was hard to look at.  I didn’t bother with MSNBC.  I’d seen Chris Matthews’ spittle and hyperventilate enough.  And Rachel Maddows’ rapid-fire delivery and endless journey to the simplest point no longer amuses me.  I actually turned on TCM.

We’ll see what Obama can do with his last term. The handling of the Benghazi debacle hadn’t pleased me.  I found him most  unconvincing.  Now he’s squaring off again with Boehner, in anticipation of the “fiscal cliff” we’re all about to fall over.  My cliff has arrived so I’m less nervous.  Fatalistic—at least in regard to my own future.  And David Petraeous!  Resigns over an affair?   Much more on this to come, I fear.

On to trival matters.  Anticipating seeing “Skyfall” and “Lincoln” with two of my favorite Daniels (Craig and Day-Lewis)…Wish I’d made a big money bet that Lindsay Lohan would cancel her interview with Barbara Walters. (If the Lohan parents went over an embankment tomorrow, that’s Lindsay’s only hope.)  ….I am happy to have an iPhone, but I still don’t understand how people read, text, look at photos and generally conduct all their business out of the palm of their hand.  It’s  certainly no good for surfing porn.  Everything is very tiny.  But, I am comforted by having a phone in case of emergencies…Kind of looking forward to seeing Madonna at MSG, though she has done some really dumb shit on this tour.  Saw her in Philly when the U.S. leg of tour began and—as usual—there are always brilliant, exciting moments.   But, she’s gotta take off the cheerleader outfit and go a bit Dietrich.   She is still is young woman.  I mean, only 54.  People talk like she’s 70!  But she tries too hard, and it is that stubborn effort that ages her beyond her years…And I have decided that CNN has a death real wish.  The absurd people they have on.  This guy, Don Lemmon, who recently engaged in a “twitter feud” with the actor Jonah Hill?   Lemmon came off like an insecure little schoolgirl. (And he does lousy interviews.)   I don’t think newspeople should be on Twitter.  It’s utterly undignified.

Well, I think that’s it for now.  Although I find more to carry on about in my responses to any of your comments.  That’s always fun.

It’s cloudy here in Hoboken and the sidewalks are still piled high with distressing signs of what Sandy wrought—furniture, entire floors ripped up, books, sentimental items ruined beyond saving, toys, clothes, computers.  I walk past it, to a house that’s messy, not well-decorated, but whole and undamaged.  And to a person who cares and exhibits remarkable patience in the face of…me.

Mr. Wow, I’m relieved to hear that you and B came through Sandy mostly unscathed.  So many, many people have lost everything.  I know I’ve missed hearing how you are, so I hope things improve for you very soon.  Times are tough, but they’ve got to get better, right?  That’s what I try to tell myself.  Take good care of yourself and B.  By the way, you’re loved too.  ♥

Dear Sherry….the losses have been devastating.  At our place, the water came right into the vestibule, it was ankle deep.  I pushed a lot of towels in front of the door and then inside as well.  That was pretty much it.  As I said, inconvenienced by the power going off.  Big deal.  Thousands of others would love my inconvenience.

Even though there are many others worse off, there is nothing pleasant about the lack of heat and hot water.  I would have really missed my cup of coffee in the mornings.  It’s fortunate that the water didn’t flood your apartment too.

Thank you so much for the hug, it felt just as warm as I think it was meant to feel.  So happy you and B have weathered this storm in pretty good shape. Talk all you want about not being “worthy”, the two of you are doing just fine and in my opinion have something really lovely together. I was relieved, surprised and joyous that the President was re-elected.  I know it is still going to be a rough road but I do believe we are moving forward.  I saw reruns of Meaghn Kelly busting Karl Rove over election results and the faces that went along with it were priceless. The only other coverage I watched were Mitt’s concession speech (sad and a wooden as ever) and The President’s acceptance speech (Daniel Sugar described it best, “eloquent and gracious”). Truly hoping that Congress gets the message and is willing to compromise and work for the good of the country.  Well I can dream, can’t I??While we were waiting to hear from you, I made a donation to the Red Cross in honor of my friends Mr. Wow and B. It made me feel, while we were waiting to hear from you, that I was doing something positive. (Other than asking anyone in the gang if we might find a helicopter).

Dear Deirdre….I wonder how much Obama can accomplish?  The hate and resistance is still out there.  Stronger than ever, in fact.   But, he’s in and I hope he can stay strong for all those who decided they’d rather give him another chance than bet on Romney.

I hate to say it, but for me, Romney’s Mormonism was an issue.  I know that’s wrong.  I’ve known lovely Mormons, but something is amiss. To me.  Maybe a thousand years from now  the precepts of the Mormon religion won’t seem so odd and new and culty.  After all, when you take a look at, say Christianity and all the hocus pocus and legends and virgin births, etc–not to mention the gilded palace in Rome–all that seems pretty darn cult-like too!   All religions require a lot of oddities and a suspension of disbelief.  Or, what is known as faith.

I honestly don’t think I’ll ever write a book.    Some success I can call my own before I retire?  Maybe.

We all missed you and B!!!!
We all came up with ideas including the helicopter which unfortunately none of your minions had one. We thought of landing virtually, but as Lila pointed out our computers would have died shortely thereafter.
However we are all planning a virtual potluck dinner with you and B as soon as you get more organized and B can make his chili.  You can provide the cans of soup and a little vodka.
I have great confidence that maybe finally the American people have learned that compromise and working together brings good results for everyone.  We all need to keep reminding the Jerks in Washington to think about others than their own political careers and America will once again be a great country.
I think the Red Cross and Doctors Across Borders who have landed on Staten Island and are making miracles work there are the two best charities to give to…We donated to both.  Just smiling and asking is there anything I can do for you seems to be what most survivors want.  A little tenderness and real concern goes a long long way.
As for work, money, bosses and exbosses…The most important thing in life is being who you are and knowing that we all love you and want to be part of your life.  I still swear one day we will all say, “We knew Mr. Wow before he wrote his best seller or went to the premiere of the movie “The World According to Mr. Wow”
hugs to both of you  xoxo

Dear Lulu…Somehow  I mixed your and Dierdre’s comments and sort of replied to both.

As for the potluck, how about cans of vodka and a little soup?

Gallon cans of vodka and a little consomme sounds good to me.
I still swear you will write a book and there will be a movie…I might have to decide to become an agent only for MR. WOW   That will shake Lalaland up for sure!!!!

So happy you survived Sandy.  We all missed you.
I truly believe this country is basically moderate – not liking extremes either way – that’s why I was positive Obama would win and I hope he’ll move forward with great resolve.

    4:39 pm | November 10, 2012
    • Mr. Wow

Dear NSH…yeah, tend to agree most people are moderate.  I don’t care for extremes myself.  Not anymore, anyway.  One lives and learns.

      6:00 pm | November 10, 2012
  • Skyfall:  we are looking forward to it too.

Lincoln:  Thank God!  THIS is what a Lincoln movie should be… not “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter,” as if our public needed even more de-education.

    4:41 pm | November 10, 2012
  • Oh, Mr. Wow.  Cold showers?  Brrrr!  No, no, no.  Water + gas stove = warm bath.  A little more trouble, but with extra time to kill… why not.

We were stuck with cold showers in Saudi Arabia for a while… not pleasant, especially when January and February came around… who knew it got so cold over there?  But we were waking up to find our water partly frozen in our canteens.  Brrr!  So first, we painted the water tanks on top of the shower stalls black.  That was not all that helpful, so we took the immersion heaters from the kitchen and stuck them up there.  Ahhhhh…. better.  Except for the part about the shower stalls being outdoors in freezing weather.  But yeah, I like being clean too, so you put up with what you have to.

SO glad you have everything back to normal now!  A long hot shower is one of life’s best luxuries.

    4:50 pm | November 10, 2012
    • Mr. Wow

Dear Lila….Nah, I just gritted my teeth and jumped in (and out!)   Although as soon as I was able, I took a long, luxurious hot shower.   I also like baths, but the tub isn’t quite big enough.  In our old place in Hoboken, the bathtub was one of those deep, wide, claw-footed numbers.  And there was a little skylight too. Very pleasant, peaceful.  Tho I don’t know if I’d care to wake up every morning now and have early morning light above me.   Artificial overhead lighting is bad enough.

      6:07 pm | November 10, 2012
  • As for the election – yeah, a lot of conservatives have been very sore losers.  Guess what Repubs:  You. Do. Not. Have. A. Mandate.  Too much of the country sees you as scary and Taliban-like.  And they are right.

  • lulu

Well I think if all the Mr. Wow’ers band together and get more followers we will set a trend of cooperation, compassion and compromise.   We can become the beacon light for others.   The only thing I won’t give up is the idea of a virtual potluck dinner so we can all celebrate with Mr. Wow and B.
I am a Virgo and I never give up….just in case you haven’t figure that out…rofl

I am so delighted to hear that you and B had so little damage. So many people lost it all. I’ll bring my semi-famous pasta salad to the potluck and also a bottle of gin. I’ve never gotten used to vodka. It’s also good that you two hibernated like bears. I love that image. Love to both of you.

Since “Deirdre’s Delights” has been going strong since our first virtual dinner, I will bring an assortment of desserts, mini cannoli, a variety of Italian cookies, pumpkin, pecan and apple pies and two or three kinds of cheesecake. Requests are accepted. I have a preference for wine so I will bring some Chianti, Pinot Grigo and Pinot Noir. Now all we need is a date!

Mimi!  A gin girl?  Gin’s always had too strong a taste for me.  I like white wines, vodka, and those sweet drinks that have you thinking,  “oh, this is nothing.  I’ll have five more.”  Then you wake up Nutley, NJ with somebody quite unattractive.  (Luckily, I haven’t seen Nutley in decades.)

Oh, and margaritas.  So I guess tequila, too.   Eh, it’ll all go great with a pasta salad.

  • Mr. Wow

P.S.  My own small experience, and the continuing agony of others is yet another reminder of just how dependant we are on “the grid.”   It’s all going to go down one day.  I believe that.  The collapse of our energy and tech sources will be the real apocalypse. (I know.  I enjoy the cinematic glamour of the meteor hitting earth too.  But I fear humanity will not be that lucky.)   And unless I meet my end fairly soon, I have a feeling I’ll live to see it.  I’m not an “off the grid” type, either–like you couldn’t tell.  Six measly days without power almost drove me mad.

Maybe instead of a cell phone I should have pestered B. for a generator.   Note to self: More soup, more rice, more beans, more batteries.   More books. And take at least one cold shower a week. Get used to it.  Oh, wait–water-power.  That’ll end.  I guess it’ll be a “ripe” old age.   Oh, well, they were all pretty dirty at Versailles.  If DuBarry (and Louis XV) didn’t mind, why should I?

On this I feel my eternal pessimism is not unwarranted.

Not manhy of us are survivalists but it does make sense for all to be a bit more prepared for weather events that more and more include loss of power for extended periods of time.  As for the ripeness factor, potpourri and a tussy-mussy might help.

As some of us in Houston discovered during Ike sometimes the lights don’t come back on after a day or two. Most were lucky to have the lights on after a week. I was lucky to have a gas range. So I could eat. People stock up on things that have to be heated. And then realize after the lights don’t come back on they have no way to heat them.  I noticed a number of people installed gas generators after Ike. Unless they’re is flooding which penetrates the gas lines, you flip a switch, a pilot light comes on, and you have lights.  Of course not everyone has gas. Everyone should perhaps. In the “new world.” As for flooding we had Allison. Which doubled back on us and turned Houston into a literal lake. Quite scary to remember.

I was stunned by the landslide for Obama. And it was a landslide. Which has of course angered the Looney Tooney Republicans. They will continue the “war” against the “black man” in “their” White House. And the votes are still being counted in Arizona and Ohio. So some of the Looney Tooney Republicans including John Boehner could possibly find that they were bounced out of office as well.  There is growing evidence of violations of the Voting Rights Act in Arizona, Florida, and Ohio.  We should demand prosecution.  And we should also demand impeachment of those Supreme Court justices who rule that the Voting Rights Act is no longer necessary. Which some will.

As for your employer I think they left no doubt in anyone’s mind how appreciative they are of you. Money isn’t everything.  But hopefully things will turn around for them and they can “hire” you back!

Good advice to all Baby Snooks.  As for counting in Ohio and Arizona, wouldn’t it be the icing on the cake if Boehner lost? Hope springs eternal.

I forgot to add in case someone wondered how the pilot is lit with no power they operate on a battery system. Some of them solar-charged.  Something I suspect more and more will look into.  They are encased so inclement weather doesn’t affect them. Unless there’s a flood but of course they can be elevated the way most water heaters are.  For those who’ve never been there, done this with a major storm, you have no idea how lucky you are.

          6:43 pm | November 11, 2012
    • Mr. Wow, I don’t trust the infrastructure either.  I love my wood fireplace (and our woods… never have bought a stick of firewood…).  It kept us from freezing in the Snowmageddon blizzard of 2010, and I even cooked in it.  Next house we move to… I want a backup generator.

Although I’ve lived in Ohio (ah the joys of living in a swing state) I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania. I had a set of lovely grandparents who began giving me martinis with two olives at the ripe old age of 13. My parents were too busy with my younger siblings to notice. So I drink martinis in the winter and gin and tonic in the summer, with and occasional something else if it’s offered. I also like wine and beer.  One drink – considering it’s pretty much straight booze is my limit. It’s a darn good thing I’m not an alcoholic or I’d be in real trouble. Everyone that I love on the east coast is fine including you and B. I am grateful to God, lucky stars, or whatever kept them that way.

Glad you are okay Mr. Wow.  I did not lose power, just TV and Internet.  My phones still worked.  I ask for prayers for one nephew and his family, they live in Oceanside, NY, and still have nothing. Don’t know for how long, they said it might be Thanksgiving.

So glad to see you and B are well. I assume the plastic swan and the boobys survived OK, too. I think I would probably react the way you did. Let’s face it – this sort of thing is scary and disorienting and maddening and just miserable. Cold showers? Ugh! But all is much better now and I’m really happy to see your lovely self here again.

And for the virtual potluck, I have a whole bunch of things. Since my ethnic heritage is largely German with some Polish, English and French, imported beer and champagne are my preferred drinks. Glad to share with others who have similar tastes.

    Dear Mr. wOw,

Living in FL my whole life, it was surreal watching others go through what we usually go through. It was strange being a bystander instead of a “victim”. But……our house always held & we weren’t killed so that’s what we always focused on. I think Floridian’s (and the Conch’s from the Keys) have sort of a “Here we go again” attitude. We always have HUGE drinking parties before any hurricane, and then are too wasted to really do a proper job with the shutters.

The next wave of shock will be when the insurance industry does what they did to FL – screw us royally. Between the new codes for everything – windows, doors, roofs, nails – you name it there is a new code for it – and the astronomical insurance payments we now have to  make for: Wind,  Flood & reg insurance – if you can even find an insurer, no wonder we drink before a hurricane hits.

As for your Boss, I have a theory 1) I think your Boss may have become a little jealous of your talent, and that’s why you were put on leave; and 2) I had a similar experience –  I, luckily, went on to bigger and better things, but the moral of the story – for me – forever after that, was – don’t ever think you are really a friend to “The Boss”. They will worry about  you, can be extremely nice and generous to you, but when push comes to shove, they are the Boss and you are the Employee. Blurring the lines always ends up in a disaster for us = the employees. Remember this! I’m serious. Either YOU have to become the Boss – which I now am – or keep it fairly imprersonal and don’t get tooooooo close or you WILL get burned.

So glad you are back with us and sharing your stories and amusing thoughts. You are really, really a funny, interesting man.

Dear Lucy…Huge drinking parties, eh?  I must visit Florida.

As for the boss–no, not jealous. But I’m afraid it all got too personal a long time ago and no way to put that genie back in the bottle.  My own fault and choices.   Too fearful to move on.  I am paying for it dearly now.  And so is B.  I wonder if we can survive this?  Everyone has a limit, and I  have stretched his to the breaking point.  I express only fear and anxiety.  That’s been going on for almost 13 years now–a 13-year depression.  Who needs that?

Oh, Mr. Wow—Have no fear, B will be there for you as you fight your demons.  Hang in there and know I say a prayer for you every day.
Sorry I didn’t get on to this site before now, but my computer was acting like it had been drowned in Sandy, and I live in L.A.  I was so relieved that you two got through this horrific storm virtually unscathed.  Our love and good thoughts were with you.
As for the virtual potluck, I’m in.
Election night was fabulous.  Now we need to goose the GOP into action.  Obama made the mistake once of thinking the Repubs wanted to be included in reform.  Now he knows that ain’t going to happen.

P.S. To my last email. The barometric pressure from a hurricane is a very well know trigger for depression & migraines. Don’t beat yourself up — it’s Mother Nature.

I do agree most heartily on the boss being the boss and never a true friend. He or she got there by working hard to appear to someone else as being better at doing whatever it is he or she does. It doesn’t matter whether she is better, just that she appears better.
We had a storm in Ohio at the end of June that kept some people out of power for several weeks. There was a great deal of wind damage and trees that went down. I didn’t have a huge issue, but others I know did. A generator isn’t a hugely expensive purchase and doesn’t seem to be that hard to hook up. I sympathize with anyone who loses power. We have to find a solution that doesn’t include “The Grid.” It means that huge areas are incapacitated. I still think we need to find alternative source of power, but am not smart enough to know what it is.

    8:40 pm | November 11, 2012
  • Mr. Wow

Dear Mimi… Well, our newly re-elected president keeps talking about alternate sources of power.   But I don’t think he can really move forward on it–whatever “it” is.   We are so melded to oil and the money oil brings, and now to our electronically entwined technologies, it seems a hopeless hope to hope that everybody  wakes up to what is likely to happen in a generation or two.  Or perhaps much sooner.

And that means people like me, too–who talk a good game, but still don’t do much other than talk.  I’m no brain in that area.  But a generator is a good idea.  Just for starters.   Those six days in the dark and mostly with no info at all was enlightening, so to speak.  Especially as B. and I are no longer reckless, restless kids, ready to hit the open road and travel with backpacks, facing the elements.  Yeah–like we were ever that!  But aging in an aging empire is rather scary.

I am very glad to see you back and relatively unscathed (Sandy-wise, that is).  It’s great that you don’t have to deal with insurance claims and the like.

I, too, have doubts about any progress in Obama’s second term, but you never know.  Maybe the Supreme Court can get another progressive in its midst.

    Welcome back.

One of my sons lives out in the country and has a well. When the power went off he came over with jugs and jugs to get water – none to drink, none to wash hands, none to brush teeth, none to cook on their gas stove with. He and my grandson both took showers that day and the next day they showed up to do laundry. My power came on quickly – his did not. Big learning experience for all of us. I can also make my ex-husband’s grandmother’s molasses cookies for our  potluck. They are wonderful.

    3:31 pm | November 12, 2012
    • Mimi, we are also on a well.  We have a very large pressure tank which gives us some reserve in case the power goes out, but we always keep a 7-gallon jug in the garage and about 10-12 one-gallon jugs in the basement… just in case.  In addition, when a storm is predicted, we fill one of the bathtubs and a washtub which we set next to the kitchen sink… and start making big ice blocks to take up all available space in the freezer, and put even more water and sodas in all available space in the fridge.  Cold fluids will maintain the temp much longer than cold air, and as you consume the water and sodas, you can bring an occasional ice block over to the fridge.

Sometimes Hubby laughs at me for doing all this, but we have never had to throw food away.  And I love our woodburning fireplace because you can cook in it if need be.

Lila, Thanks for the terrific comments. Last year I was taking care of my own mother out of state and the kids found a new “senior” apartment for me. Enough health issues and closer to both of the families made me do this sight unseen. It has turned out to be a good move for me, but there are people who live here who rely on medical equipment to live. I saw five ambulances at different front doors within an hour. And the next day my power came on in the morning. But it was funny to see that the planners in my family hadn’t prepared for a water problem. I did a lot of laundry for a couple of weeks, but they loved dropping it off and picking it up nicely folded. Next time a storm threatens I will tell them to start freezing ice and filling a tub and some of their many sinks. And I’ll tell them that my online friend Lila is the one who made the suggestion.

    8:32 pm | November 13, 2012
    • Mimi, thanks!  😉  I use those cheap Glad or Ziploc food containers to make the ice blocks, and just leave them in the freezer until I need the space or the containers back (still have one in there now).  The rectangular containers are better fits for this than the round ones.

The bathtub water and a bucket are also handy for toilet-flushing, something pretty essential, I think….

Welcome back, Mr. W!I am glad to hear you survived relatively unscathed and you are able to count your blessings.
I was packing, driving across country, and unpacking during the worst of Sandy and the election. I hadn’t realized Sandy was THAT bad until it was at its peak…I hope the recovery is swifter than Katrina. As for the election, I chose to check in the morning after and avoid all the gasbags. Though I too was amused by the “fair and balanced” Fox crew acting as if they were waiting for The Rapture.
I am a part-time Portlander and part-time Michigander in an effort to save money while I am in school. I totally relate to your dilemma as to career opps for middle-aged folks. I have been seeing some of my former newspaper associates go back to the news biz…and taking a big pay cut for it. Security or the great unknown…always a dilemma in the workplace. Add all these young people who can’t find work post-college…oy vey, it’s enough to make you want to throw the blankets over your head! I hope to find my niche somehow in writing, and I hope you find yours (and get paid for it!).Cheers, Rick

That also makes us safe and happy in a “little corner of our hearts.” I wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving. To All…You better be eating, drinking, loving your friends and family right now.  You better not be here.  Stop reading this instant and have more stuffing!  (My favorite part of the meal, natch.  I could eat it everyday.)

Happy Thanksgiving.  Healthy Thanksgiving.  And a happy, healthy everyday, too.

    Love, Mr W.

(I see you cannot do as you are told.  Didn’t I say back away from the keyboard?  Well, be like that.  Just wash up first.  Nothing worse than stuffing in-between the S and D.)

All the dishes are done, pots and pans clean so there won’t be any stuffing between the s and d!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and B (I am toasting you with Moet)!  It’s been a quiet day for us, just my dear husband and I this turkey day. Odd but fine.  We will be with our gang for Christmas. I’m not a Black Friday shopper so I am not camping outside any Big Box or (heaven forbid) Mall. Not sure I get it but whatever floats someone’s boat. Daniel, sounds lovely. I will not admit that this very liberal, sappy, cry at the drop of a hat person, watched The Kennedys mini series marathon on REELZ! Since it was the 49th anniversary of the assassination, I could not resist and I went through lots of kleenex. Typical of me, even though I know the outcome. Oh well, another excuse for one more glass of wine!  Hubs watching some football, so we went back and forth between programs! Talk about mixing the entertainment! Hope all our lovely group had good, fun day!

My sister and I whipped up Thanksgiving dinner for the family.Honestly, the hardest part was the clean up!My contribution: Chocolate mint banana bread and buttermilk cheddar biscuits…no wonder Liz is my favorite movie star! I felt like the second Mrs. John Warner yesterday post-dinner!
I watched two delightful movies on TCM on Turkey Day: Cheaper by the Dozen and Sitting Pretty, both with the delightfully sharp Clifton  Webb (Laura). “Cheaper” is one of my fave childhood flicks and both movies were surprisingly fresh with sharp, frank, situations for their day. And Webb was witty and delightful as the superior smarty pants in both.
Excuse me now while I check into rehab and plot my next comeback ; )
Hope your Thanksgiving was fine, Mr. W and friends!

Glad to hear everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. I celebrated with family, a small group this year but we had a good time and caught up on family news. There was enough food for twice as many people but isn’t that the way it always goes?  No mall or any of that for me. I cherish what little sanity I have left. Rick Gould, could we trade a few recipes? Chocolate mint banana bread sounds degenerate, which is to say, I gotta have some. Buttermilk cheddar biscuits make me salivate. I have a good recipe for sweet potato casserole with pecan topping and sure fire brine for the turkey. Want to trade?

And now that we are suitably sated, food-wise,  on Sunday can all slip into our caftans, clutch a tumbler of Jack Daniels and and watch “Liz and Dick.”   I expect it to go down in history. (The trailer alone, w LL as ET saying, “Who’s counting?” in reference to her marriages, is  joyous camp all by itself.)

Oh, and keep a teasing comb nearby; use as a self-mutilating device to stop the incessant guffaws that are sure to annoy people miles away.  Although maybe nobody will notice?  I expect a nationwide cacophony.

    4:28 pm | November 23, 2012
    • BabySnooks

So far the critics who’ve seen it haven’t been impressed enough to even call it camp but I suspect that is what it will be and of course there will be this “what a bunch of f**king crap” emanating from the cosmos. Followed by a familiar cackle. Just the trailers they’re showing so far would indicate that all you will be able to do when the shock wears off is laugh. But it will probably have quite an audience. People will forever be fascinated by “The Burtons.” And why not?  We all wanted at one time or another to be part of Anthony and Cleopatra. And they were George and Martha.  So they were us. And we were them. We just didn’t have the jet, the yacht, the money rolling in faster than we could spend it.  They were the right scandal at the right time. And ushered in an era of hedonism the likes of which we had never seen and probably will never see again.

Mr. Wow! Wouldn’t you consider watching LL as cruel and unusual punishment?? I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch but I guess I will at least peek. The bits that I have seen are awful, but if you say camp, I’ll give it a go.  Wouldn’t want to be sorry I missed it later.  Somehow, I don’t see it being rerun very often.

Keep in mind “Cleopatra” sank a studio. “Liz and Dick” may sink a comeback…

      7:41 pm | November 23, 2012
    • Mr. Wow

Dear Dr Sugar–cast her in what?  She has made a cheesy TV movie.  Even if it gets ratings, she is still a dead duck in Hollywood.

Oh, and at the “premiere” of this thing, Lindsay remarked: “Elizabeth was drunk on sets.  I have never been drunk on a set.  I did my time and I respect the law.”

This is almost as classic a line as ET’s own:  “I only sleep with the men I marry.”

      8:28 pm | November 23, 2012
      • BabySnooks

I think she meant to say “with the men I wanted to marry.” But it’s just as well. If she’d said that she wouldn’t have become a senator’s wife.

The chocolate banana bread trick is simple: follow regular recipe and add half a cup of cocoa. Then use a cup of mint chocolate chips instead of walnuts. Peanut butter chips are pretty dang good too.
Buttermilk makes a subtle difference in biscuits. A little grated cheddar in the dough isn’t so shabby either!
My sister keeps teasing me to watch Liz and Dick Sunday. I keep threatening to cut her out of my will!
The only thing Lindsay and Liz have in common are circumstances. Their behaviour regarding their situations could not be more different. But that’s just my opinion ; )

    • Haunted Lady

I think I love you, Rick. Here’s the sweet potato casserole:

      Serves/Makes: 8  Ready In: 30-60 minutes

      Ingredients:
      3 large sweet potatoes
      1/2 cup butter, melted
      1/2 cup sugar
      1/3 cup milk
      1 teaspoon vanilla
      2 eggs

       ***TOPPING***
      1 cup chopped pecans
      1 cup light brown sugar
      1/3 cup flour
      1/3 cup butter, melted
      1 teaspoon vanilla

      Directions:
Peel and slice sweet potatoes into 1/4 inch slices. Cook in water and drain and
mash. Beat with electric beaters, stopping every so
often to remove any strings that may collect on beaters.

Add butter and sugar to warm potatoes and continue mixing. Add milk, vanilla
and eggs. Mix well and put in a buttered casserole dish about 8″ x 12″.

Mix the Pecan Topping ingredients and crumble over top of casserole.

Bake 30 minutes at 350F. Freezes well before or after cooking.

      And the brine.
      Ingredients
      2 1/2 gal cold water
      2 c. kosher salt
      1 c. sugar
2 bay leaves, torn into pieces
1 bunch fresh thyme or 4 T. dried
1 whole head of garlic, peeled
      5 whole allspice berries, crushed
4 juniper berries, crushed or 1 sprig fresh rosemary

      Directions:
Place water in a container large enough to hold the liquid and bird you intend to brine.
(Note: a Rubbermaid storage container with a lid works well but be sure the bird is
      completely covered with the brine.)
Add all the ingredients and stir until sugar and salt dissolve, about a minute or so.
Place in refrigerator or cool area, like a garage or back porch, for 24 hours.
When ready to stuff and roast, wash off the brine first. Remember to watch roasting time
as a brined bird cooks in much less time than usual.

The gravy from this is excellent and the meat stays moist and tasty.

The biggest problem was that she did not, for one moment, seem to “be” Elizabeth Taylor. Still, it was trashy fun.

    • BabySnooks

She didn’t seem to “be” anyone actually including herself. It was was so awful I went to bed  not long after the “second bankruptcy” and the screening of Virginia Woolf. It was too much to, well, to overlook. They were never broke, never close to it, were in France not Mexico during the Academy Awards, and I could feel my body going numb when he bought the yacht so they could live at sea to avoid taxes.Dramatic license is one thing. Making things up is another.

I must admit I roared when Sybl Burton just casually showed up and casually agreed to a divorce. Did these writers check anything? I doubt she was casual about anything from the point she realized this was not just one of the flings.

That actor playing Burton, and forgive me for not knowing who he is but I just woke up and haven’t had coffee, actually wasn’t bad.  At times he managed to capture Burton. Unfortunately that merely made the casting of Lindsay Lohan all the more ludicrous. Elizabeth Taylor could go from 0 to 90 in a split second  – Lindsay Lohan never got the engine going.  There was no emotion to her performance.  She seemed to just be reading lines most of the time.  Maybe it got fun after I went to bed but I suspect it got trashier as well.  And cheesier.  Definitely deserves a “Rotten Tomato” award.

Well it certainly sounds as though the 3 minutes I managed to watch was more than enough. It was repeated right after it ended. I tried one more time but just couldn’t stay with it. Cheesy and pathetic; so very sad to see Lohan, who was very good a few years ago, was truly “not there”. Awful, awful, awful.

Baby Snooks – Your review was exactly what I thought. I wanted to read the posts today to see if anyone knew if this movie was acurate or not. It didn’t “seem” to be true – I don’t know anything about the 2 of them, but I couldn’t believe they were broke or that ET would live on a boat with her whole family – I was also confused by the ending, etc. Did Liz still love him? I thought they hated each other? Were they still married when he died? In the movie it looked like it?  If you are going to do a movie about probably one of the most famous couples in Hollywood – get your facts straigth for people like me, who watched to see the true story. I didn’t even care about the acting, I knew it was going to be awful and casting a skinny Lindsay as Liz = she looked like a kid dressing in Mom’s clothing complete with bad wigs… was no surprise. I guess I’m going to have to get a book and read about them

There was this odd “based on a true story” flashed across the screen.  Which was curious since most of what followed in fact wasn’t true at all. And seemed oddly to be more a hatchet job than anything else which turned out to be a dull hatchet. As dull as the movie itself.  Love?  Certainly a lot of passion.  I think obsession would be a better word. On both their parts. Bottom line is in a way they were playing parts in a movie they were starring in. And I tend to agree having heard it said so often that there probably would have been a third act.  They were toxic to each other. Fun to watch however.  I found out recently that their house, which soon became her house, in Puerto Vallarta was torn down for condos. The bridge which was a copy of the Bridge of Sighs that linked his house that he bought for himself and her house remains. No one knows what will happen to his house. It will probably become the parking garage. The bridge was quite symbolic in a way because some remember the days when things started flying across the bridge and people would sigh and go “they’re baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.” They were fun. Probably the funnest couple in Gringo Gulch. But there were times they were more fun to watch. From a distance. She also sold the house in Switzerland in 2010.  So she knew the end was near. But she knew that in 2004-2005. That must have been difficult for her since it was the last of the ties to him. After he died, Christmas was more about just the annual trip “home” to avoid taxes.

Maybe if someone else had played her it might have worked. Lots of comments to the internet reviews. Most amazingly very favorable to Lindsay Lohan.  Some will continue to shop at Walmart. Some will continue to proclaim Lindsay Lohan as the next Meryl Streep.  Which must frighten Meryl Streep.  Particularly the possibility that Lindsay Lohan might portray her next. When Elizabeth Taylor heard the camera start whirring, she turned on what can only be called the magic. Unfortunately there is no magic with Lindsay Lohan. There certainly was none last night.

I chose not to watch. You can watch the real thing on TCM or Netflix.Just my opinion, I predict that Lindsay Lohan is over as contender as an A List actor. I say that knowing that anything is possible in Hollywood. But Lohan, even while filming the Liz epic, couldn’t stay out of trouble for five minutes. And the reviews have been vile. Her negative image, to me, is nearly beyond repair. And Lindsay ain’t no Liz or Scarlett in picking herself up, dusting herself off, and declaring tomorrow to be another day…I truly think Lindsay is going down a lonely road more like Marilyn than Liz.

3.5 million people watched (which means it’s Lifetime’s 4th most-watched TV movie of the year).

    • Mr. Wow

      Dear Dr. Sugar…

I guess I was among that 3.5 million.   I am stunned by the cheapness of the production and poor Lindsay’s attempts to be an epic figure.   I mean, it’s not like La Liz wasn’t quite slutty for her time.  She was!  But she had brilliant press people to eternally re-imagine  her ever-changing image, and her own inherent “fuck you”  survival instinct.  Also, she had great posture. Taylor’s vulgarity excited her audience.  (Even as they gasped their disapproval)

In another era, Lohan might have been captured by a studio and reasonably constrained.  At the very least, some of  her exploits would have been covered up.  (And her parents put to sleep.)

That was then.  This is now.  LL is a gaudy train wreck..  The conductor has abandoned control.  Only Lindsay can stop or re-route this personally murderous Orient Express.

Lohan had the opportunity to work with Jane Fonda and Meryl Streep and managed to get called on the carpet both times for unprofessional behaviour.
Now Lindsay is reduced to working with Charlie Sheen and porn star James Deen, Heeeyyy, I rhymed!(a little Virginia Woolf shout out)
Lohan actually reminds me behaviour-wise of Lana Turner, who kept the MGM PR department in over-time…abortions, adultery, quickie marriages, bigamy, gangsters, constant nightclubbing, etc. But because she showed up on time and her movies made money, LT was cut slack. Compare that to Judy Garland, who gave MGM fits, as well. Except Judy’s constant latene$$ and behaviour caused the studio to drop her at age 28.
I think Lindsay has fallen into the fallen star category…not a survivor-type star.

So glad I missed that movie. I’m sure they’ll rerun it and I’ll hop on the train wreck until the end. This site is fabulous. We have gone from being grateful to learn that Mr. Wow and B are safe and well, through disaster planning, onto Thanksgiving wishes and recipes, and now to Liz and Dick. I love this and think perhaps we are writing some sort of epic that future generations will look at and say “Huh, look at the stuff these people talked about back then.” Perhaps they will have costume parties where they portray what  they think we look like.

Dear Baby…really?  For Liz, I thought that was pretty rough on Lindsay.  I mean what–shall we load her into the tumbrel and have her guillotined?

It was a bad movie with a bad lead performance.  She has been unanimously panned. She is such denial I doubt she understands the criticism.  Which is sad.

Thanks for the links Baby Snooks – interesting to read that Lindsay was devestated by the reviews. Kind of sad to be that much in denial. Did she actually think that a Lifetime movie was going to put her on the road to the Acadamy Awards? Didn’t she have a clue when she saw the sets? Read the script? Apparently, she has always thought of herself as a great actress. In what? Herbie Fully Loaded? Hasn’t she ALWAYS been a B actress?  What is so different about this Lifetime movie and Freaky Friday 5 (or whatever it’s called?) I don’t get it. Seriously. She could have had some fun, camped it up – take it for what it was. It’s a paycheck, afterall. But she was “really” counting on THIS movie as her big comeback? That’s really scarier than all her fright movies put together.

Dear Rick–I was thinking, why is Joan Collins visiting Burton’s grave?

Of course the reality was not far off.  After being barred from the funeral by the last wife, ET showed up a few days later in skin-tight jeans, four inch heels, a tight striped blouse and blonde hair (her first flirtation with blonde)  She was not invisible.  The paparazzi would not let her be, so she left.  Later–like four in the morning–she returned.  The paps were still there but her entourage opened huge umbrellas around her so she could kneel by the grave with some semblance of privacy.   The few shots that escaped show her disheveled, without makeup.  Looking like, well–a 54 year old woman in deep grief.    She later said her experience trying to get to Richard’s grave was “the worst thing in my life–worse than Mike’s death.”

He bought plots in a cemetery in Wales. The wives and husbands that followed aside, they probably both should have been buried together there. But, well, the taxman. He hated the taxman. Why he had bought the house in Celigny to begin with. Same reason why she and Eddie Fisher bought the house in Gstaad. I suppose he could have bought two plots in Celigny. But didn’t. And he bought the plot. Not Sally. Or so I heard as they say. Just for him. No Missus. I think Elizabeth’s visit was overplayed by the press. She always spent Christmas in Gstaad. To appease the taxman.  Sally of course bought the adjoining plots in Celigny. To make sure only she could be buried next to Burton.  Angered by the media circus at the memorial service. They were both out of line. But there is just one widow. Elizabeth thought there should be two. His financial arrangements were sealed as were hers.  But rumor was there was still some “intermingling” of the assets by agreement.  And Sally got her “share” after Elizabeth died. I doubt anyone will ever say. Including Sally. But she got very “forgiving” shortly before the auction at Christie’s.  So it may have been a matter of expediting the final check.

Liz Smith made a comment about the loyal entourage. Well first of all Elizabeth paid more than most. And paid very well. She also had everyone sign “non-disclosure” agreements. And those didn’t come to an end when she died. Which may explain why there haven’t been an avalance of tell-alls.  Her children have probably made it clear they will sue. She left her image the way she wanted it. Interviews. The various books she lent her “approval” to. But no real authorized biography. So this and others will never really be the “real” story.  The ones who might tell can’t. They signed the agreements.  He was a different matter. And those diaries. Well. Pretty damning when you get past the Shakespearean repartee. As far as I’m concerned, she meant well. Even at her worst. And that really is all that matters. She meant well. She made a difference in people’s lives for the better.  So few really mean well. So few really make a difference.

I should add with regard to Liz Smith’s column that not everyone loved working with her. I heard there were problems with the foundation. And towards the end the publicists came and went. Including Warren Cowan. Everyone polite about it. But they weren’t exactly devoted and loyal. And things weren’t always warm and fuzzy with Chen Sam. But the friendship always prevailed. Still midway through the Washington adventure Chen took off for New York. And the entourage took over finally. I still say she should have sent the entourage to Los Angeles and stayed in Washington. But alas that isn’t what happened. It’s a good thing the perfume deal arrived because even with the televison movies and the trusts the entourage as well as the family would have capsized Cleo’s barge at some point. Some people don’t talk publicly. But they still talk.

As for the film it was really unfair to her. Have heard that from several. As for the public image the reality is they were really more George and Martha than anything else. There probably would have been a third act had he not died. And it probably would have set off World War III when the curtain fell.  Which it would have. Like my grandmother used to say sometimes love isn’t enough.  They loved each other. But they were also toxic to each other.

Dear Baby…well, all I know is that when her assistant’s mother was dying, and that woman asked to die in Elizabeth’s home, ET said, “of course.”  And she was there at the woman’s bedside when she passed.  And Elizabeth paid for everything.

Whether or not she was always “easy” to work with…that true-life tale speaks volumes to what she was, under all the crap.

Warren Cowan?  He worked for her for free, for the “prestige” (such as it was in those last years.)   He was an old man himself, and hardly knew what to do with a client who was crippled and often a bit loopy.

I think the Lohan movie was most unfair in how it portrayed her as a mother.  I doubt she was always “there” but when she was I think it was quality time.  And later, she became a non-judgmental friend to her adult children.  She knew better than to ask, “Why are you doing this?!”

Someone who knew her at the peak of the Taylor/Burton madness remarked: “Sober, she can be boring.  All she talks about is her children.  But with a few drinks she’s quite lively and vivacious.  Very sexually attractive!”

You guys know so much! Is there any book or books you can recommed to me to read about Elizabeth Taylor so I can get a more complete knowledge of her life? That movie was so bad and choppy, I don’t feel satisfied and want to know more.

Hi-I do not have much “inside” knowledge of Taylor’s personal life.

But when ET passed, I noticed many local news items around the country where people who had had some personal interaction with Taylor (usually assisting her professionally in some capacity) and almost uniformly, they all commented on how polite and pleasant she was, and more than a few commented that she seemed genuinely curious about them as people.

Elizabeth also brought Chen Sam into her home when she became terminally ill. As well as her former daughter-in-law Eileen Getty, when she was ill at times with AIDS. ET has always been there at the end for her friends and loved ones.

That’s what I find noteworthy about Elizabeth Taylor as a person.

I like to give to Toys for tots at the local fire dept.  Just buy whatever you can and take the unwrapped gift or gifts to any fire station.  I do this with  my grandson and it shows him that we have to give back to those among us who otherwise would go without.  Another idea is:  Contact your neighborhood school and see what you can do to help those students and their families who are having a rough time.  Every school has a need for this kind of involvement.  Or, bake something yummy and treat those living in a nursing home.  When I was teaching, I would take my second graders to sing Christmas carols at a local senior center.  Many a tear was shed on these happy occasions.
Do what you can–it will bring you joy, as well as those you are helping.

Call your nearest food pantry, they are usually run by “faith-based” organizations, and see if they will take a driect donation. Saves them money. Most people don’t realize the food pantries have to buy the food from the food bank.

    My ideas….
search through your house and find things you own and haven’t used for four years….donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc…. you will never miss them and think how lucky you have cleaned out the clutter that had accumulated
go visit a senior center or retirement home and bring your old books, dvds, and just yourself
continue inviting others to join Mr. Wow and Forming the Thread and watch out world…here we come!!!!

    • Dr. Sugar, I saw that… ugh.  And on the heels of slugging some other woman in a NYC nightclub.

She’s 26 and an adult; her toxic parents got her off to a rough start in life, but at this age, she’s responsible for her own actions.  If all her jaunts in and out of courtrooms, house arrest, jail, and community service hasn’t taught her anything by now, she’s not going to learn.  I wouldn’t hire or bankroll her for ANYTHING, nothing personal, just business survival.  She’s damn lucky she got the Liz n’ Dick role.

        I read that the woman who Lindsay smacked was a ‘psychic’ who was pestering her wanting to ‘give her a reading’. Doesn’t excuse the smackdown but I know I would feel like doing that too. And before we get caught up in the you wanted to be a celebrity, it’s part of the territory and she should not be out at all hours, yes, very true. I still think everyone is entitled to some personal space and the option to say no to anyone.;

Dear All…B. and I wish all of you a Happy Chanukah!  Or is it spelled the other way, with a H?  I always see it both ways.  Anyway,  happy C or H even to my non-Jewish friends.  Why not?  Never a wrong time to send love and good wishes.

Even to the people who made “Les Miserables.”  I went to an advance screening and it totally reversed the supposed effects of my anti-depressants–after the first 30 minutes.  More than two hours later I was in despair.  I know the show has a lot of fans–even I saw it 20 years ago on Broadway–but the movie?  Oy, is what I say, in the spirit of the holiday.

Mon dieu!! I was soooo excited and looking forward to seeing this movie. I saw the play several times and loved it. I am sorry it was a source of despair to you. I will most likely see it anyway but lower my expectations.Hope things are going well with the cleanup and restoration for you and B and the rest of Hoboken.

      • Mr. Wow

Deirdre…don’t let my opinion dampen your spirits.  Look, lots of people adore the show and are ready to kill all those who don’t get it, or the new movie version.

A lot of passion went into it.  Too much passion for me, but I’m quite the curmudgeon.   Okay–not totally.  I think the George C. Scott TV version of “A Christmas Carol” is the best, and I watch it every year and sob on cue, just as I did when I first saw it.    “Les Miserables” was just not my cup of musical misery.

I agree, Mr. wOw, that the George C. Scott version is excellent. It doesn’t get enough respect, in my opinion.

Not to worry, dear friend, my spirits are not dampened.  What a very dull world we would live in if we all liked the same thing (except you of course, we all love you).  I will see Les Miserables with high hopes and the knowledge that I love the music most.

Like sand through the hour glass, so are The Days Of Our Linds…
Lindsay Lohan‘s probation was revoked this morning in court and the judge has now set a hearing to decide whether to lock Lindsay up for the better part of a year.

Lindsay (who wasn’t present) was arraigned this AM on charges that she lied to cops and drove recklessly when she crashed her Porsche on Pacific Coast Highway last June.

The judge who arraigned her — Commissioner Jane Godfrey — scheduled a hearing for January 15th on the probation violation.

If Godfrey decides Lindsay did violate her probation, Lindsay could face 245 days in the pokey.

As sick of hearing about the Lohan girl as I am, I still feel very sorry for her. Something is terribly wrong and she’s headed for tragedy. I hope she goes to jail and I hope she gets genuine help. I hope, too, that her contact with her parents and most of her “friends” is severely curtailed for her benefit. No matter who or what or why or whatever, I truly want to see people get a real chance to get their lives sorted out. There but for the grace of God go you and I.

What is wrong with me? I cannot stay away from this. I have been watching since Friday. We have friends who lived in Newtown, it is beautiful. I live about an hour from there, I have grandchildren the same ages ad those precious angels. We MUST stop this insanity. Our children, families and our country are far more important, to me, than anyone’s “right” to have automatic or semiautomatic weapons and huge amounts of ammunition. Rational steps must be taken.

Don’t like the violence – no matter what we profess to believe, I really want to think the best of my fellow humans. One person can and does destroy a human life, but no one has succeeded in eliminating humanity. This is a season for joy, happiness, and peace – and I’m trying to keep my eyes on that even as we pray or offer compassion to the victims families.
I’ve never touched a gun,  never had any desire to. I simply can’t imagine a life where I need one.
At any rate, I’ve now shared my not-so-profound thoughts with the rest of you. Please feel to blast awayl.

I have never touched a gun either; nor do I have any interest. I also do not understand why anyone needs guns in their homes. And please, I beg you, don’t use the Second Amendment as an excuse or even better the idiotic “guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Those arguments just don’t cut it anymore.

While I understand how deeply people have been impacted by the horrible tragedy in Connecticut, I don’t think knee-jerk reactions are likely to prevent any mentally unbalanced people from committing murder. If someone is determined to kill, they will find a way. There needs to be greater awareness and support for mental health issues. Taking a course of action when one’s emotions are high is unwise.
And Second Amendment rights are as valid and as important as any other rights. Nothing is a weapon until someone uses it as such.

    11:48 am | December 17, 2012
    • Deirdre

Haunted Lady, this issue has been debated ad nauseum since Reagan was shot in 1981. For me, the argument that if someone really wants to kill they will has lost all meaning.  Does that mean we do not try? Do we just sit around ringing our hands and crying over these mass murders?? It is absurd that in this century we a clinging to the “as written” Second Amendment. The laws against automatic weapons and huge amounts of ammunition need to be strengthened and enforced. No grandfather clauses which let some keep these weapons because they already have them. We need to fully support and fund mental health care and do everything possible to erase the stigma of mental illness; just has been done for cancer. And we need the NRA (remarkably silent this weekend) to not have to power to “buy” a large percentage of the Congress.

My reaction is not knee-jerk. I have expressed it over and over and over for years in letters and petitions and with people in general.  I am not alone in feeling this way and quite sadly to me, I find more support each time another mass murder occurs. I am tired of the people who say they will give up their weapons only when they are “pried from their cold dead hands”. Horrendous statements made so easily unless or until it is someone they love.  I read that a man in Aurora, Colorado who was in the theater that night; was carrying his legal weapon. He said he could not use it because it was so dark he was afraid he would hit someone innocent and at least as important, it happened too fast. I will stop for now. I respect everyone’s values and points of view on nearly everything. For me, there is no debate on gun violence. It is long past time for some level of control to be instituted in our country.

    • Therudedog

Oh, how I did not want to allow myself to be drawn into this; just meant to stick my head in a few days ago, say “Hey” and then mosey on.  As it is, I’m having to keep a tight rein on my words:

H.L., I wonder if you could give me one Good Reason why I should 1) Want an AK-47;  2)  Think I would need an AK-47;  3)  Register to own an AK-47;  4)  Imagine that I would ever be in a position that an AK-47 could possibly help me;  5)  Assume that “they” just MIGHT have an AK-47, so I need one, too;  6)  Feel any more “free” as an American just because I can get myself an AK-47 fairly easily;  7)  Feel any less “free” as an American just because I can’t have access to an AK-47;  8)  Explain, with a straight face, my need/want/right to own an AK-47?

Little children who STILL SMELL LIKE BABIES are being killed in our country.  Shall we allow the sale of automatic and/or semi-automatic weapons to continue because of the fluidity of interpretation of an Amendment that was written before the idea of a semi-automatic weapon was even a damn concept?  Our place on the Food Chain of Civil Human Behavior falls lower and lower every day.

“Why buy an AK-47?  Um…because I can?”   This is the foundation for some sort of reasonable debate?  Please.

Rude Dog! Love you more than ever! These are the points I have tried to make. And Lulu, I too have signed every petition and sent letters to legislators. I understand it is a complex issue for some. Not for me, I have 3 irreplaceable children and 7 irreplaceable grandchildren; 2 of them the ages of the children murdered on Friday. I will pursue this cause for the rest of my life, if necessary. It is long past time.

    Dear Haunted Lady,
“Nothing is a weapon until someone uses it as such.”
    I disagree.

Whether or not someone uses it as such, an assault rifle IS a weapon. It is not a back-scratcher, it is not a hockey stick, it is not a baton used to conduct an orchestra – it is a weapon. (You may never use a nuclear weapon but it is, still, a weapon.)
Use does not define objects. They are what they are.

    1:26 pm | December 17, 2012
    • Deirdre

Thank you Daniel Sugar, your explanation is spot on.

One more thought. There needs to be more careful ratings on movies and video games. And parents must shoulder the responsibility for making certain that their very vulnerable, impressionable children are not exposed movies, television and video games that are unsuitable.

    1:50 pm | December 17, 2012
  • Haunted Lady

The weapon does no harm until it is used. If you wish to tighten controls on guns then you should tighten control on knives, motor vehicles, aircraft, blunt instruments, etc. And every time something like this happens, there is a great outcry about gun control but not a word on finding out why someone does this and implementing preventative action. Banning or increasing controls on guns will not end this kind of thing and I think it takes away resources to determine the real cause.

How true. I remember being on vacation with one of my kids, his wife(at the time), and two of my grandies. Princess Diana died and on vacation and when it rained, that was all that was on TV. We turned it on at times, but I started referring to it as “The Princess Diana Marathon of Death.” My granddaughter saw the reruns the following year and said “Oh look, it’s The Princess Diana Marathon of Death” as though it was a movie. I was horrified at what I had done and after that, no matter where we went on vacations – and there were quite a few – I packed a VCR and some kids tapes. Wasn’t going to be that stupid ever again. Parental controls are meant to be used. I rarely watch the news, I prefer to read it. I read something once to the effect that if you read something, the horror is  limited to your own imagination. If you watch it, the horror is limited by someone else’s imagination. I  think my own imagination provides me with quite enough horror. I was once an abused wife. Horror and fear are something I’m very familiar with.

In politics, (as in life), you get what you settle for. If you’re happy with the way things are, do nothing. If not, contact your elected officials and let them know you’ll vote them out of office if they don’t get rid of the guns. You get what you settle for.

Friends–considering the awful deaths of those 20 children and six adults in Conn., I am hesitant to say I’ve been silent because of an unusually harsh cold, now in its second week.  (Yes, I had my flu shot.)   The only good to come of a cold this bad is that when I talk–when I’m able to talk–I sound butch and sexy.

As to the terrible Conn incident, nothing will change.  No matter how many innocents die, people will, in the infamous words of candidate Obama, “cling to their guns…”  All empires are founded upon blood and violence, a worship of power and the symbolic power of weaponry.  Our empire is no different.  Nor it will help to remind anybody how outmoded the 2nd Amendment is.  Apparently the shooters mother had become some kind of Doomsday prepper.   We are the most over-weaponed country in the world, with the worst crime rate. Grisly irony.  (Have any of you noted that all the Doomsday preppers appear to be white?!  I guess they figure they have more to live for, being white?)   Anyway, the NRA will allow nothing–not even 20 dead little children–to get in the way of their “hunting rights.”

I am all but inured to this latest horror because of the 24/7 coverage and unconvincing  newscasters attempting to wring pathos out of every second.  The facts stand alone and need no commentary.   I don’t need to be told how bad it is, or how I should feel. I know how I feel. Stop turning this into a damn movie premiere. Just as we can become desensitized to violence, we can go the other way, too.  But there’s never a balance.

And then we have Fox and Huckabee telling us it happened because there not enough God in schools and modern life.   How this sick creature explains hundreds of years of bloody history–during far more “religious” times is beyond my understanding.  (Fox has also been quite sparing with footage of Obama’s remarks on the Conn slaughter–why show him as a human being, after all?)   Anyway, I thought it was us gays that caused tornadoes and mass murders.    I guess the closer gay marriage comes, the less credit they want to give us?

Other subjects up and down while I’ve been hacking my brains out–Lohan.  Pathetic.  I just can’t help feeling for her.  She appears to have destroyed everything–her beauty, career and talent, which was once considerable.   I’d  give her a helping hand and a prayer  before I’d lift a finger for for the likes of that detestable man of God, Mr. Huckabee.  I’d make sure she was locked away from booze, pills and her parents, of course.  (Yes, at this point I think only real jail time might help.)

As for The Tree.  If it goes up, it’ll be this weekend.  But it’s been a really bad year, and I’ve struggled with “getting in the mood” for many years.   This might be the Christmas lit only by a string of lights.  I’ll see.  If the tree goes up, you’ll find me with it.  Tho I am awfully skinny, apres bad cold.

Love you all, and let’s none of us complain too much (me most of all)  Christmas might not be genuinely holly jolly–we’ve known that for a while.  But at least we are not spending it with the memory of newly buried children.

P.S.  Well, that was quick.  Not only did Obama fail to mention the word “guns” in his initial speeches on the Conn massacre, today we’re being told that “it’s a complex issue.”  We should be patient.  Yeah, we should be patients in a mental institution if we thought the government would actually move on this–or on any other vital matter.  Too busy being afraid, greasing palms, placating, meandering, misleading.

I have signed every worthwhile petition to change gun laws hoping that maybe if we all express our desires Congress will have to listen.  Thank goodness of Diane Finestein!!!!
At least Senator Mecham and Warner, both with A ratings from the NRA was ready to see changes made.  A few steps forward.  We need to keep writing our Congress and insist.
I have no problem with sensible rifles for hunting and a sensible handgun for protection if that is ‘your thing’ but then also storage them away locked from strangers, children and other people who do not know the proper handling and use of guns.

Dear Lulu…From your mouth to somebody in government’s ear and good for you for doing, rather than just bitching.

Ummm…no hot toddies right now.  Drinking anything with a cold just lowers my resistance.  Then again, drinking anything at any time lowers my resistance.  Luckily, I have reached the age where I am pretty much resistible, despite margarita-ville.

Here’s hoping you feel better soon. And I can hardly wait for the tree. There must be something in the air this year as I keep running into people who just can’t get into the holiday thing at all, me included. No decorations or anything. In site of that, I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a better New Year.

    11:09 am | December 18, 2012
    • Mr. Wow

Dear Haunted One…Even for people with “normal” depressive problems, the holidays—the insistence on being happy–can drain every ounce of the spirit out of you.   I hope I feel better enough physically to do the tree thing. (It’s actually hours of hard work–especially if the tree fights back.  “I’m straight!  Get this crap off me!”)   But I also don’t want to feel I’ve done something bad if I don’t.

Everything this year and the due any minute six-oh has put me more under the holiday radar than usual.   I do see some indications of a rally.  But if not, I hope nobody holds it against me.

Oh, Mr. Wow,  You have our love and respect no matter what.  If you don’t put up the tree, no biggie.  The Christmas Season takes its toll on so many people.  I think it is the expectation that everything needs to be perfect, the tree decorated, the cards sent, the presents bought (and wrapped), the many get-togethers to attend.  All this with a smile plastered on your face and a ho, ho, ho for all we meet.  Don’t get me wrong, I usually love the Holidays, but some years we just need to lay low and take things easy.  You have been sick, give yourself a break and enjoy what you can and let the rest go.
        Love to B.  Mary

Of course no one would hold it against you if you don’t do the tree. In fact, many can empathize. Maybe we should put together an I Don’t Feel Like It This Time party and not worry about it. I still wish everyone happy holidays anyway.

Mrs. Venable: Strictly speaking, his life was his occupation. Yes, yes, Sebastian was a poet. That’s what I meant when I said his life was his work because the work of a poet is th elife of a poet, and vice versa, the life of a poet is the work of a poet. I mean, you can’t separate them. I mean, a poet’s life is his work, and his work is his life in a special sense.

Mr. W-Enjoy whatever amount of holiday spirit you feel ; )Christmas has never been my favorite holiday, but I am in Upper MI with family, so I keep the snark to an acceptable level, and concentrate on my adorable nephews!
Aside from writing and researching for school, I’ve been jotting down notes of the various movies I have been watching (on my sister’s TV) after 5 years of being TV free. I want to start a blog after the New Year and will def put the word out to my friends here…
What can I add to the comments about the shooting tragedy? Your sentiments echo mine, Mr. W. It’s just another example of the polarization in this country over issues, where people from both sides won’t give a little and meet each other half way. In this particular issue, it is literally killing people. Sad, sad, sad.
But on an up note, I look forward to reading more Mr. W in 2013…Best wishes and good health to you! And to everyone here, I love checking in and seeing what folks are talking about ; )

Along with banning assault weapons, I say tax guns and ammo to the sky.  Let everybody who claims they “need” guns to defend themselves pay big-time for protecting themselves.   Their  lives are precious, even if  the lives of five and six year olds aren’t.

I want to take a moment to wish everyone on this lovely blog a very politically incorrect,Merry Christmas and a very Happy Holiday Season to all. This group is such a unique a loving place to be. We have said it before but it bears repeating, the respect and kindness shown here is special. Although few, if any of us know who we are in “real life”, we care. Mr. Wow and B have become important to us all and they have cemented this crew in a bond of friendship.  I wish everyone here a lovely season and all the very best possible in 2013!xo

Thank you Deidre for the well wishes.  They are returned to you, as well as all the loverlies on this site.  We have become very close, some of us even went on trips together, although, virtual, we had a blast.  I can feel the the love and caring when I read the different posts, even when we disagree, we do so with respect for each other.

Mr Wow brought us together and we stuck like glue.  No one can ever have too many friends.

      Happy Holidays!

Dear Friends…me and B. just came from the emergency room here in Hoboken.  Mr W. has a touch of pneumonia.   And I much I adore the late great Miz Liz, I do hope this doesn’t lead to a tracheotomy.   That’s only glamorous when you’ve stolen somebody’s  husband, been forced to portray a hooker on screen and then won an Oscar for said portrayal (and/or tracheotomy.)   I’m afraid no tree this year.  I can barely drag my ass downstairs to try and eat food that I can’t taste.

I must say– the year began with being laid off and ends with pneumonia.  I assuming 2013 will be cheerier.!

Merry, Happy, much love from me and B.

Hi Mr. Wow–Emergency Room, pneumonia, what the hell is going on.   I assume you are a little better,  since they sent you home.  Funny thing, I also was in the E.R. this week for about 24 hours. They would have admitted me but there was no room at the inn for this Mary either.  Long story short. I am home, chest pains are gone and I will try to have a cheery Christmas.  My daughter and grandson are expecting no less.  Mr Wow, you MUST take better care of yourself. Relax, eat, do as B says and you will enter the New Year feeling up to the task of keeping us entertained.  Love to you and B and Merry Christmas!  Mary

Dear Mary—I think they sent me home because my temperature dropped while I there.  Otherwise be using B.’s IPad sitting up in bed, in hospital, as the Brits say.

I’m glad you are better.    Very Merry Christmas!

Well I hope you are sitting up in bed at home. You stay there and rest and take care of yourself.  And let B take care of what you can’t. I would come do your tree but I don’t do winter well. Maybe I’ll come in July.  I was in bed most of the week. I don’t do the Pneumovax very well either. My second one. So I’d been there, done it once before. Hopefully you haven’t. But have had the Pneumovax just the same. And if you haven’t, this is your gentle hint to.  Sending you lots of love and hugs and cute young things walking down the street to look at while you recuperate. While B isn’t looking of course.  Don’t forget the chicken soup!

Dear Deirdre…thank you, honey!  I’d take up the offer of chicken soup, but I cant taste anything, still.  Frustrating.  I hadn’t intended on being a size zero for my any-second-now 60th birthday!    So not a good look for me.

Dear Rho…thank you so much.  I will, I am.  I had hoped to rouse myself to cheeriness, as much for you all as for myself–it’s been a grim year.  (BUT, a blip on the heartbreak radar screen of thousands of others. I can’t  imagine what those Conn. parents are experiencing, tho I was impressed at how much faith and comfort in that faith they apparently found.)

I’ll be back in 2013, older, none the wiser, but still hoping the future can still be “plump with promise” as Maya Angelo once said.

HAPPY, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all the wonderful friends on this blog and to all you love.  This is the first year my husband and I will be celebrating New Year’s together. We have been married for 43 years but he has been in the restaurant business for all that time plus 22 before that. A family business started by my in-laws before my husband was born. They decided to end the run earlier this year. Decided to leave while people still enjoyed coming in while my husband and his older brother still had some life left to enjoy not working. We had planned to have a lovely evening with lifelong friends just 4 of us but on Saturday, I was hit with whatever plague is currently going around. Fever, chills, cough et al. Don’t want to share with anyone and certainly don’t have the energy to shower, dress and make my way to the car. Oh well, at least I won’t be hung over. Guess we’ll wait until next year for our “big New Year’s Eve” bash.  Instead we will curl up on the comfy couch and watch our son’s alma mater Clemson play LSU in the Chi Fil’A Bow. I do love college football. Oh and I did promise my children that I would not be doing the thing that I seemed to have done for nearly all of the New Year’s Eve’s of the past; I will not be folding laundry as the ball drops in Time’s Square!Love to all and blessings for 2013!!

There are a lot of people in the audience that I do  recognize. Unfortunately, since I’ve never seen Mr. WOW, I would not be able to pick him out of this crowd. . Does he have red hair? Maybe he’s the red-headed guy in the seats on the right, who eventually caught the ball after it flew through the goalposts?

Well, no matter, I just hope Mr. WOW is okay and that he’ll contact us soon.

We ought to do something, shouldn’t we. If Mr Wow is too sick to post, I wish B would give us an update. Is it time to start up the search party? I’m in if we do – even if we end up in Bellevue.

I’m in! It has been too long since we have had even a peep. Maybe they’ll let us all room together at Bellevue. Hoboken, we are coming!!

What really worries me is that Mr. Wow didn’t do his usual Golden Globes commentary.

    January 15, Monday 2013…

Dear Friends…a lingering flu/cold-pneumonia/…a dark, treeless Christmas…a New Year’s without much genuine hope…and a startlingly crushing 60th birthday have kept me down.  I could have done a whole post on it and thrown myself a giant 2013 pity party, neatly forgetting actual tragedy, real problems.  Including all of yours.

I am alive and well despite my inability to get my head out of my ass and begin to live again, truly.  It’s a shameful thing to be so self-absorbed and I’ve always thought so.  At least when that self-absorption takes such bewilderingly dark turns.  (It’s okay to be amusing and self-absorbed.)  I couldn’t fake it, not to you all.  So I stayed away.

I hope to write a new post soon and attempt, without driving you all to drink,  to explain recent weeks, with at least of modicum of humor and general awareness.

    Love,

    Mr. Wow

Dear friend, I so truly wish you could find a way to believe that your crew here at Mr. Wow does our level best to understand and empathize with you and your feelings.  I, for one, do not want you to hide from us and think that we only want the bon vivant part of you.  Yes, we all have sadness and rough times in our lives and sharing those things with each other is one way to give them light and then do our best to find a place for them.  For reasons that honestly don’t matter, the core of this group has decided that you are special and important to us; please believe this.  We care about you and B and the things that have darkened you life.  You make us laugh and cry and think and dream.  I would not have taken virtual trips with anyone other than my pals here.  To the best of my “pollyanna” ability, I understand your struggle; and hope and pray for some relief for you.  I know that just telling you how much we all care about you is not enough but it is all I have. 60th birthdays are hard for most people and for some, truly debilitating. You know what? It’s okay.  I am sorry that the meds you take are not giving you much help.  We have all said this many times, but I repeat, you do not have to post an epistle every time, just a quick message to let us know how you are doing.  Please, take care and when you write again let it be whatever you want to say, dump, rant or even scream about. It can’t hurt and it might help.Hugs,Deirdre

Hi Mr. Wow–Thank you for getting back to us about what is going on in your life right now.  We love you, dear man, and want only the best for you.  Depression is a horrible disease that sucks us dry.  But there is hope of better days ahead even after turning sixty (believe me).  Each day, as you are feeling physically better, go outside and soak up a little sun.  Go for a walk with B and raise your head high and keep moving forward.
      Best, Mary

Well we do worry about you.  We love you when you’re down as well as when you’re up. Shame I don’t live next door. We could “god I’m so depressed” together.  Just remind yourself each day like I do that life is fair. Unfortunately it’s filled with schmucks. And like Elizabeth Taylor, we’ve met them all.

      1:56 pm | January 14, 2013
    • HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR WOW!  In honor of the occasion, here is a small gift, a token of your association with Elizabeth Taylor.

Dear Mr. Wow, we all love and care about all the sides of you, not just the happy joyful ones. We knew you were sick, and we were worried – although I do think Bellevue would only improve with all of us there. I’m so glad you are okay. Please take care of yourself – eat some chicken soup – and remember that we all love you.

Please remember we love all your parts, not just the bon vivant part. I’ll be 64 in about 3 or 4 weeks which means you’ll always be younger than I. Maybe that thought will perk you up a bit. Hang on, dear lad.

Thanks for letting us know that you’re OK (being a relative word, of course).  I turned 60 last year with no one to share it with (talk about a pity party!) and it doesn’t look any different for this February 21st either.   Sending you my best wishes for a complete recovery.  Hugs. bigred.

    • OK BIG RED!!  Now you have given us something to do!  PARTY at Mr. Wow’s blog on 21 Feb!!

Mr. Wow, you don’t have to provide anything but the venue, the rest of us will trash this place up but good.  Booze, noisemakers, party hats, cops…   And it may be belated, but we wish YOU a happy birthday too!

      Any other birthdays coming up?

    Dear Mr. Wow,
I understand and I’ve been in the dark, crippling grip of depression myself. I am here to tell you there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I promise. I missed ‘live blogging’ with you during the Golden Globes last night, and I was imagining your sarcastic humor all through out the show.
    Mr. Wow, you will prevail.
Just remember, in the throws of depression, at the worst of it, it’s considered a GREAT DAY if you can manage a hot shower.
We are all pulling for you, but don’t feel any pressure. When you can, you’ll update us.
    Until then….  ((((((((HUGS))))))

Ongoing depression’s a fucking drag, especially when you’ve tried everything, and there’s no magic cure.
I’ve been at a MFA writing conference, doing great on the writing part, and struggling with the social and networking part. It’s in these situations that life feels eternally like high school! But all you can do is put one foot in front of the other. Which is what I did, and now near the end, I’ve managed to make some nice contacts. But I die a thousand deaths inside!
So, for anyone out there, and particularly Mr. W, I am empathetic. I love coming here.Rick

    • Rick, MFA?  All that comes to mind is Ministry of Foreign Affairs… that’s not it… Master of Fine Arts, maybe?

What are you writing?  Fiction?  Would love to get into that sometime… too many distractions at the moment, though… but I have noticed that my “writing style” is gradually emerging on my blog, after years of cut-and-dried, bare-bones, just-the-facts military writing.  It’s interesting.  Different.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction ; )
Sometime this year, I want to start a blog featuring my writing and things that interest me…I will put out the call to my friends here when that happens.
I wish we could convince Mr. Wow that not only does he have a distinctive voice in writing, but that he has a story or two to tell!
