The Christmas Photos Are In!

Mr. Wow Quacks!

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again—I ferociously do NOT agree with the wonderful new political correctness that suspends and fires people from their jobs; people who express themselves publicly.  Often in a foolish or profane manner, but that’s not the point.

If the guy on “Duck Dynasty” wants to say he thinks homosexuality is a sin and that black people were “happy” under Jim Crow (it is this latter comment that I found truly offensive!), it’s his right.  He shouldn’t be punished for speaking his mind.  Or what passes for his mind.   Have we all become such babies?   Are we—if we are offended—unable to speak up?  There are a multitude of news outlets to express dismay and disgust.   We’ve come a long way from the old “Letters to the Editor” days.  Everybody blogs, everybody tweets, everybody speaks, everybody vents and purges.

Commentary today is—if you want to get Biblical about it—like a plague of locusts.  Nobody needs to be fired for stupidity or prejudice or a sincere expression of religious dogma.   Disagree with these opinions? Cool, go out and shame the perpetrator.  CNN…MSNBC…Gawker…TMZ…Salon.com–they are all waiting to fill their yawning hours with nasty back and forth.  (Fox News fills their yawning hours with Sarah “He’s palin’ around with terrorists” Palin.  As if that wasn’t ghastly, irresponsible, potentially deadly rhetoric.)

And stop demanding apologies!!  They are always patently insincere and crafted by lawyers, press reps or the CEOs of whatever corporation feels threatened by righteous indignation.  (Or, usually, leftist indignation.)  Accept the facts of life—not everybody loves what you do in bed, what color you are, your spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof)   Work to change laws, strive to educate the young.   How much more effective if the useless tools at GLAAD had stated:  “We are disappointed with the remarks of Mr. Duck.  We hope he will someday truly come to Christ and understand how harmful his views are.  In the meantime, we pray for him.”

Do not put people out of work.

I am gay.  I am liberal.  I still believe Obama is a good man, if a shitty president.   I also believe the Left shoots itself in the balls every time they get on their high holy horse and demand the heads of those who are not as enlightened as they so strenuously think they are.

Stop it!    I feel like I am talking to spoiled, unruly children.

Let the ducks and the savages have their say.  Be smart enough to come back with something more potent, creative and useful than “You’re fired.”

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good quack.

Love,

Mr. W.

Dear Deidre…Unfortunately, it doesn’t  always come back to get them.  Witness the unflagging, unapologetic denizens of Fox News and their friends, such as Mrs. Palin.

Santa (fictional) and Jesus (who if he existed, probably looked like Mel Brooks with a very deep tan)  are white, according to Meygan Kelly and everybody else is “humorless” and jealous of her and “the powerful Fox News corporation.”  Karma doesn’t always cooperate.

I woke up and saw your new post. I was so excited thinking there would be pictures of your Christmas decorations – instead Quack, quack. I started laughing because all I could see in my mind were the ‘fools’ who have jumped on their various bandwagons promoting their own agendas.  I truly listen to all sides and then make my own decisions.  No one should be fired because of their beliefs (point-of-view).  You are absolutely right that Karma doesn’t always cooperate.  So please post pictures of your Xmas decorations.

The Christmas pics will be along in a few days.  I just pulled out the decorations.  Have a cold as usual, so I don’t want to push myself and end like I did last year–pneumonia and no tree!

If this guy’s remarks are so offensive, why are all these people giving him a wider audience? Ignore it and it will pass. Seriously, who will care all that much about what this man says if it isn’t spread from pillar to post?

    12:49 pm | December 21, 2013
  • Mr. Wow

Dear Haunted One…speak to the people at GLAAD, who were the first to go crazy over this.  It’s a new age and there is no such thing as a “casual” remark or an interview being ignored.  Remember, he’s a big star. (incredible but true.)  I think the audience for the show is around 12 million people.  That’s a lot these days.

    12:53 pm | December 21, 2013
    • Haunted Lady

Good grief. 12 million. Who knew? I’ve never seen the show as it’s not to my taste. Well, maybe a lot of viewers would have laughed off his remarks but now it’s a cause celebre. I suspect a year from now, maybe less, something else will capture public attention.

      6:22 pm | December 21, 2013
  • Daniel Sugar

I really wonder how many people will be gay bashed (or killed) because of the quacky man’s comments and I’m reminded of a line (by Clemenza) in “The Godfather”:
“You know, you gotta stop them at the beginning. Like they should have stopped Hitler at Munich, they should never let him get away with that, they was just asking for trouble.”

    1:36 pm | December 21, 2013
  • Mr. Wow

Dear Daniel…gay people are more likely to be danger because GLAAD publicized his remarks so relentlessly and went after his job.  Do you think the millions who believe what Duck Man believes are going to think…”Hmmm…well, he got fired.  So, his beliefs must be wrong.  I’m changing my attitude too.”  Not likely.  How are you going to “stop” him or other bigots?  He is a millionaire and a radical evangelist.  He was before this TV show, and he will be when and if it ends.   He will now be further encouraged to spew his hate.

There’s no stopping intolerance, once it is inbred.  Point out as many terrible inaccuracies as possible in these and similar obscenities.   But point them out to the young, who still have a chance, before they are “carefully taught” by their “godly” parents.   Boycotts, putting people out of work and forcing ridiculously insincere apologies don’t help the cause.  Any cause.  Listen, even tho Martin Bashir is a truly awful man, I don’t think he should have lost his job over the Palin comments, ugly as they were.  Alec Baldwin–needs therapy.  Can’t control his temper. Still, I would have liked to see how his show developed.

I don’t think hate-speech should be ignored.  But unless it is followed by hateful actions, or genuine encouragement to harm, it is still free-speech, and instead of GLAAD worrying how many stupid celebrities they can wrangle for their next rounds of galas, they should try to calculate more intelligent and thoughtful courses of action in the face of hate-speech–they might even get somebody on the other side to truly say, “Hmmmm…maybe I was wrong.”

    2:03 pm | December 21, 2013
  • Daniel Sugar

I would argue that there is (implicit) encouragement to harm because his statements suggest gay people are “less than” and, therefore, acceptable targets.

    3:28 pm | December 21, 2013
    • Mr. Wow

Agreed. But as long as it is “implicit” there isn’t much to do. I  also agree that I’d rather hear what the haters say openly, rather than below-the-radar hate. I actually found Quacker’s statements about all those happy black folks back in the day to be equally, if not more, insidious.  As long as I can remember Leviticus has been thrown around trying to put gays in their place–along with killers and drunkards and guys and gals who do it with beasts. (Animals, I mean, not simply unattractive humans.)

I’d venture that Ducky knows more about bestiality than the average gay person.   He seems pretty sure on the subject of vagina vs. anus.  You have to travel someplace before you can recommend it or scratch it off your vacation list.  I’m never returning to Cabeza de Lobo, for instance.

In an odd way, it’s actually helpful to have Captain Quackers on the air because it provides me with an insight into his mind. Let’s face it – I already know what I think about homosexuality. What I don’t know is what others think. It’s the same reason I read “The New Criterion” and “The American Spectator” – I already know what I think – I want to know what “they” are thinking. (And, by the way, what “they” are thinking is worse than you can imagine.) Ultimately, (fortunately) I’m never going to meet Captain Quackers – I hang out at The Polo Lounge – he hangs out in a swamp. There is something to be said for propinquity…

Sebastian agrees, no more Cabeza (from now on he’s going to Fire Island).

    5:25 pm | December 21, 2013
  • I agree with you concerning someone like the Duck Dude.  He’s on a reality show and only represents himself and his own business.  So, pffft.  Whatever.

HOWEVER, I do think firing is absolutely called for in the case of someone who is presumably paid big bucks to be an “expert” on strategic communications…. yes, I refer to Justine Sacco, the former PR executive for IAC.  When someone like that appears to suffer from a rather offensive and chronic case of diarrhea of the mouth, they have proven themselves incompetent at their actual JOB, and they also tarnish the company’s reputation as well as their own.  Naturally the company will distance themselves.

In Ms. Sacco’s case, it wasn’t just this last offensive Tweet that did her in.  She had a history of repeated embarrassing blurtings in social media.

    6:15 pm | December 21, 2013
  • Mimi

The thing about Quackers and all the other folks that have been fired lately is the money. I’ve never watched the show. Reality TV in that context bothers me a lot and I choose not to bother. The thing that I got from the print press is that he is “suspended” which makes me believe that the network will figure out if he is a financial liability or not and then truly make up their minds as to whether or not to fire him.
Yes, GLADD is giving this controversy too much time, but I too grew up in the sixties. MLK used publicity to his advantage. The Vietnam War protesters did as well.
Fortunately I grew up to be not an idiot and suggest that all of us “sixties” people that aren’t idiots, get together and give interviews that don’t bash anyone!
I am one who wants to see the tree!

Dear Mimi…the tree is not up yet.  It will  be smaller this year.  And I still have to decorate the window.  Bad cold (again!) not putting me much in the spirit.  Hope to sleep this off tonight and get it  all done tomorrow.

    Merry Christmas Mr. Wow.
Daniel, I am SO into Ozzie and Harriet!  I followed Hope and Honor all last year, watched them hatch, watched Harriet build her nest rails higher as the eaglets grew bigger and bigger, watched them learn to ‘branch’ (what they do before flying) watched Ozzie bringing the daily feast of fresh fish, oh, just ALL of it was fascinating.
Did you see Harriet protecting her two eggs the other night when an owl showed up on the night cam?  Truly amazing.
Sorry, off topic, I know, but I was thrilled to read here that Daniel is following Ozzie and Harriet. (It is AMAZING  to see Ozzie tend to Harriet and the little eaglets.) Yes, we are all on standby where I live, in Vero Beach.
PSFor what it’s worth, I too am so sick of political correctness. Merry ChristmasHappy HanukkahHappy Kwanza daybut most importantly,Peace and Love to all.

    Hi Jamie
Ozzie and Harriet are fascinating. I’ve been bird-watching for years. You might also enjoy watching the Decorah Eagle cam. (Same set-up – UStream camera.) (They just built a new nest.) There is also a great hummingbird cam called Phoebe Allen and the Great Spirit Bluff Falcon cam is incredible. (Falcons are the fastest creatures on the planet – they fly 250 mph!)

    7:58 pm | December 21, 2013
  • Jamie

Cool. Thanks, Daniel, I’ll check them all out. Falconry in itself is fascinating. I used to live on Nantucket, and my island doctor, very eccentric, was a …. searching for the word….Well, he had those huge gloves and he trained his falcons to fly all over the island and then come back to him with a simple bird call.  He did that, what ever it’s called.
I have really learned so much after watching Ozzie and Harriet. I’ve always had a deep respect for all living creatures, but now I’m just in awe. I had know idea that the male bird was so protective and caring, for instance.
Merry Christmas to you, Mr. Wow, and all the wow-ettes.
PSI’ve always been too intimidated to strike up a convo. with you because of all of your awesome movie quotes, etc.

Dear, dear, Mr. Wow,On what has to be the worst Christmas of my life, truly, you brought the HUGEST smile to my face.I’ll just say it. Why pretend like the rest of my family:My daughter, turned model in the days of heroin chic, now just heroin chic, minus the chic, is missing again, for about the 18th time. She has been to every rehab in the land, was clean for 8 months AGAIN, and is now on the streets of NY somewhere, and will most likely die. My 16 year old niece is suicidal due to bullying and has just been released from a psychiatric facility, calls me daily, and as she likes to say, her ‘bat shit crazy mother is in denial’.  I could go on, but it’s bad. Very, very bad.
But alas, I opened your email this morning and had trouble finding the right words, until just now.  Why not the truth, I asked myself. So while others are happily feasting and dancing around their tree and opening gifts, your photos brought me SUCH JOY.
I absolutely love that you put tinsel on Liz’ eyebrows in one of her pictures, or is that just my imagination. It could be, as I said, I’m having a bad day.
But YOUR smile is the very best anyone could ever ask for. You’ve been through hell and back and your smile could light a billion Christmas trees.
Merry Christmas, Mr. Wow and B.,and yes, you do take the prize in over the top, garish, horribly tacky Christmas decorations.Perfection.
And Danny, our Eaglets have hatched. Have you seen them?

          6:10 pm | December 25, 2013
          • Mr. Wow

Oh, Jamie!  I’m so sorry.  You were so energized and involved with the eaglets, I never would  have suspected anything bad was occurring.  (I did look and it was pretty terrific.)    I’m not  going to say, “Don’t worry” or anything idiotic.  You have every right to worry.  But…look at me.  I was never on drugs but I was on the streets and in bad places and could have fallen much lower had it not been for my basic timidity and good sense. Try not to dwell on the worst case scenario.  Oh, wait, that was one of the idiotic things I wasn’t going to say.  Look, you always have an outlet here.  Good, nice people come here and they are good to each other. So come and vent and keep me (us) up to date.

I’m glad the photos amused you.  See, I told you it was Tijuana time in Hoboken!

I’ll say it anyway, just for luck–Merry Christmas.   Stay in touch.  And if I might venture a suggestion–have a good strong egg-nog!

  • Mr. Wow

Well!  The tree is smaller this year.  But the place already looks like Santa’s Bordello…

Or like ET looked from around 1962 to, well…eh.  There was always Audrey Hepburn for quiet class and dignity.  (“You don’t look at all like my late wife,” said Robert Mitchum to Liz in “Secret Ceremony”—“You look more like a cow…Mooooo!”  She was wearing a wild print mini-dress cut low.  And white go-go boots. She pulled a knife on him.  I try to remember moments like this as I throw tinsel at the tree while it screams.)

Amen, Mr. Wow (coming from an athiest no less).  Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and should be allowed to express it.  Those who disagree can speak up, boycott, ignore, etc.  I completely agree with your view on this.

    4:26 pm | December 23, 2013
  • Mr. Wow

    Dear Bigred…

I don’t know what I am exactly, in terms of belief.  I can’t believe in literal interpretation of the Bible, certainly. But like many, I find life so pleasurable and so painful, it is difficult to imagine an end that really is an end credit, The End. And no re-runs or DVDs.   I’m interested in reading various philosophies and theories.  But , eventually it all seems like the Greek and Roman mythology I loved so much as a child.  I think one can be a tremendously loving and humane person without specific spirituality.

As for the subject 0f this post, mine is not a popular opinion among my own friends.   But I just can’t get on board with depriving people of their livelihood because of something stupid that falls out of their mouth, or if they express–as Duck Man did–what he thinks is God’s law.  (I’m still looking for the Bible passage that compares homosexuals to terrorists.  Must be in Old Testament. Lots of bloodshed there, in between all the be-getting.)

The Left almost always loses these culture battles.  And this has been a crushing defeat. (A&E are the ultimate hypocrites.  No power on earth will remove that extremely popular show from their network.)   Maybe the anti-gay ugliness this event revealed–again, eternally!–has woken up GLAAD to what they should really be doing to protect and promote gay rights, and leave Ducky to heaven.   Or a sultrier climate.

I have a few things to say. I’ll make an honest attempt at failing to keep it brief.

“Free speech” only means that the government isn’t permitted to punish or take actions against citizens for opinions they express. That’s it. People often mistake “free speech” to mean that a person has carte blanche to say absolutely anything they want about anything or anybody without there being any consequences whatsoever. People can rail and rage and cry foul all they want about what this guy has said and/or the reaction to it, but unless the government steps in to take action against him, it’s not a freedom of speech issue. It’s just some guy saying something horrible and being taken to task for it.

And the words themselves seem to show more ignorance than hatred. All of his talk about vaginas and penises and anuses tips the hat to the most basic aspects of the homophobic narrative – that it’s just sex. “Since it’s just about sex anyway, why not stick to vaginas, guys?”, which quickly devolves into “Since you refuse to be discriminating about the type of hole you’re putting it in, what keeps you from putting it in children or animals if they’re what happens to be available at the moment?” But it’s not just about sex, right? I don’t think people would be fighting so hard for things like gay marriage if it were strictly a plumbing issue.

And what I can’t accept is the “I’m just saying what the Bible says” defense. The Bible also tells you the proper way to beat your slaves. These are things that the Bible says that most reasonable people now ignore because understanding, common sense, and basic human decency have finally begun to out-pace the Bronze Age notions of how things should work.

With all of that being said, I agree with the sentiment of Mr. Wow: The correct response to this (and other situations like it) is not some loud, baby-ish demand for an apology. The best response to a crazy action is not an equally-crazy reaction. Cutting somebody down and forcing a non-pology from them doesn’t enlighten the mis-guided, or help change minds.

But do we let such unvarnished, Bible-fueled nonsense go unchecked? Of course not! As sane, well-meaning adults, we have the ability to articulate grievances in an informed, thought-out way that is deserving of respect – not a childish temper tantrum. That will get a swift reaction, but we don’t simply want to punish people for thinking silly things – we want to change their minds. Shouting a person down and punching them in the nose (economically) does not advance the conversation forward in any meaningful way.

Actually, the modern villain of all this dust-up is no more than the interactive internet and what it has wrought. People now have the ability to make their own heinous-oops, I mean various–off the cuff remarks public. Each of us knows someone, loved one or no, whom we simply tolerate. This whole business of feeling better about ourselves at someone’s peril is awful but breathing new life each day. How many people actually expected this guy to be other than we now see? Or that a large swath of people want nothing to do with homosexuals, or blacks or women or men for that matter? Or with the rich, or with the poor? Or the French, or the Germans. Hatred for Americans, don’t get me started. There is more darkness than light. Lions & tigers & bears. Just ask the kid who has affluenza.

    10:05 am | December 24, 2013
    • Mr. Wow

      Dear Delusional (NOT)…

Correct!  Now, here I am reaping emotional benefit from the new technology, doing something I never thought I would (or could)   I try to be fair even when I’m a bitch and always attempt to see the other side when others disagree.  But I will have my say, and it’s all terribly self-important and narcissistic.   But for me, quite therapeutic.

I stay away from Facebook and Twitter.  I am actually on Facebook, but I have only two “friends” and there’s no or info on me and I don’t post pix or share, etc.  My un-retouched 60th birthday portrait is the only photo.    Twitter I simply don’t understand, especially as not a day goes by when somebody doesn’t get in deep shit over something they’ve Tweeted.  And nobody learns their lesson from these relentlessly publicized stories.

I love the Internet for a lot of things–fast, usually accurate info (vital in my biz) and the ability to download photos of Liz and Marilyn.  And, uh stuff.   But other aspects, and the entire world now living hunched over the palm of their hand…lots of bad posture and an inability to communicate like fairly sensible human beings coming soon to an evolutionary process  near you.

I”m on Facebook but not Twitter although I have an account. I just can’t deal with Twitter and its “character count.” Facebook is fun at times. Boring at others. I decided to keep mine small but set my settings so “friends of friends” can read and comment and message me. So I’ve reconnected with some. And disconnected from others.  I don’t understand how some can “know” 4,000 + people. I don’t want to know 4,000 + people. Although there are probably 4,000 + people who wish they didn’t know me. And didn’t respond to the friend request. No big deal. At least I know who’s in what camp so to speak.

Love your Christmas photos – you certainly were in a Christmas mood this time!  I just wasn’t in the mood for some reason and sort of hibernated. Last year was not my favorite year due to my health and having to deal with the transition from young and vibrant to old and vibrant. Well, I look vibrant but pink light bulbs in the bathroom help.

Wishing you and B the best for the coming year. And wishing more and more columns from you!

And that, Mr. Wow, is exactly why I will never buy an i-Phone (or any such device). (If you’re staring at a phone all day and pushing buttons with your thumbs, that’s where you are. I don’t care where you’re doing it – the Louvre, the Vatican, the Grand Canyon – if you’re staring at that phone, that’s where you are.)

I do have an iPhone (B got it for me)  But I use it very sparingly as a cell-phone (“I’m running late…a sudden screening came up…I’m absolutely not drunk!”)   And I do enjoy the picture-taking aspect.  But the rest?  My friends are horrified that don’t text or twit or use the apps or read on the damn thing!

Merry Christmas Eve to all of you!!!

I hope I don’t see a response before late tomorrow.  Enjoy your family and loved ones. Don’t argue at the dinner table.  Eat ruthlessly.  Tomorrow? Let’s think about doing something nice for somebody we don’t know.  Let’s do more than think about it.

So glad to see you posting again, Mr. Wow. I didn’t have time to skim through all the comments (even though I know this is always an insightful bunch), so apologies in advance if I’m repeating someone else’s posting. Mrs. Palin is obviously off base in calling this censorship, since no government officials have tried to stop Duckface from spouting off. And of course as an employee of A&E, his bosses have every right to step in and remove someone who they feel isn’t representing them well.  Having said that, I don’t get how radio and TV companies hire people like this, and then act as if they’re shocked (shocked, I say!) when they live up to the behavior that got them the gig in the first place. What exactly did they expect? Enlightened attitudes and Kum-ba-yah? I’m also with you on the firing of every single person who offends anyone, any time, ever. Granted, Duckman is responsible for his words and the consequences that follow, but I’m not big on the mob mentality that comes with the public demanding the head of every offensive person in the world. We’re definitely too sensitive on that front.  I read an article on FB about a Long Island school concert where they sang “Silent Night” with altered, non-religious lyrics. People were upset and complained, and the school apologized and promised not to do it again. But I see posts from people continuing to demand that the music teacher be fired, and lots of hand-wringing as if this was the hate-crime of the century. Sometimes I think we need to get over ourselves. Sorry for the rambling. I’ve missed your blog musings. Merry Christmas, Mr. Wow! 🙂

Dear Jonny…Merry Christmas to you, too!

I watched Mrs. Palin’s interview on Fox with Greta Van Susteren.  Fascinating– even aside from the obvious crush Greta has the former governor who abandoned her job because she was criticized too much.  (Wow–Obama should have quit five years ago!)  That always gives the Palin/Greta conversations a nice touch of sexual tension.

Now, Palin doesn’t think Duck Patriarch should be fired or suspended or in any way punished for his remarks in GQ–an article she did not read!  Well, I don’t think so, either, as hateful and  unsurprising  as his comments are.   But what a competent journalist would have asked Palin, went unasked by Greta:  “So, Sarah, you think everybody should be able to speak their mind and not suffer consequences.  Yes? Then what about Martin Bashir?  Shouldn’t he still be on the air?  After all, he made a big apology to you, but that still didn’t save his job. And you didn’t rush to defend his free speech.  King Duck hasn’t even said ‘sorry if people were offended.'”

But to be honest, I don’t any journalist these days has the intelligence or competence to ask follow-up questions.  They are all too busy on Twitter.

As for the “Silent Night” thing.  This is where liberals and atheists make it hard for the rest of us who exist sensibly.  The exact lyrics of “Silent Night” mean nothing to me in a religious way,  but the song is the song, and it is hardly indoctrination to sing something that has existed since 1818.  The teacher is a idiot and harmed every one of us who is not in the thrall of religion, but believes in live and let live.  It’s like people who object to Nativity scenes.  I happen to enjoy Nativity scenes!  Some of them are very beautiful and creative.   I look at them as art, or seasonal decoration.  Nobody’s forcing me to have one in my house.  Or fall down on my knees in front of it.   Leave it alone.    And I won’t force anybody to attend a gay wedding or interact knowingly with gay people.  And you don’t have to read or watch anything gay related. Tons of hetero stuff to enjoy.   See, now wasn’t that easy?

      Apparently not.

Dear Doctor Sugar–I can assure you, I am enough of a twit, I don’t need to tweet.

Hope your day is going well.   I am reading the biography of Bob Fosse–very good!  finished a truly terrifying “what if” novel titled “Christian Nation.” Nothing but marathons on TV (three days of “Hawaii Living” on HDTV?)   So I popped in
“Cleopatra.”   Right now she’s wearing one of Irene Sharaf’s hideous get-ups, topped with some kind of crazy royal shower cap.  Actually the whole thing looks like a shower curtain.  Maybe it was a long night with Burton and when she finally got to set there was no time, so they pinned a shower curtain to her, gave her shot of Jack Daniels and said, “Now go out there and emasculate Richard, uh–I mean Antony!”

“I am Isis.  I am worshiped by millions who believe it!”   You go, girl.

    Antony: I will what?

    Cleopatra: On-your-knees!

Antony: You dare ask the Proconsul of the Roman Empire?

Cleopatra: I asked it of Julius Caesar. I demand it of you!

Mr. Wow–My sister has the same Elizabeth Taylor motto “more is better” philosophy as you do about Christmas–she even hung candy canes in the bathroom!
Your pics look fab and so do you!I enjoy Christmas mostly for the kids in the family and this year was great fun.
My greatest indulgence, besides baked goods, was movies, natch. Watched Alistair Sim in the greatest “A Christmas Carol.” I watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” on NBC. A childhood staple, hadn’t seen it in awhile. Still packs a punch and I am always amazed at studio era directors like Capra’s ability to tell a story. Also admirable that nice guy Jimmy Stewart cracks under pressure and isn’t always such a nice guy…this should have been his Oscar win. And boo to NBC for the incessant commercials. No limited interruptions just once for this holiday classic? I forget the era we now live in ; )
After seeing Douglas Sirk’s “Imitation of Life” and “There’s Always Tomorrow” on TCM, I rented “All That Heaven Allows” with Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. I think this may be my favorite Sirk movie. I’ve only seen it a couple of times, and not lately. I am always knocked out how Sirk is so critical of ’50s mainstream America. He’s totally empathetic toward Wyman’s widow and Hudson’s hunky gardener’s romance as they face disapproval from family, friends, and everyone but the mail man! The movie looks beautiful and the camera work that emphasizes the characters’ emotions is brilliant. Wyman reminds me of Stanwyck, straightforward and not stylized, like Crawford or Turner. I have to say I have come to appreciate Rock Hudson over the years. He used to get panned as wooden. Hudson was no Olivier, but he was a talented movie star: he’s very warm, natural, and I was struck by his wonderful speaking voice. Maybe it was because I just saw Keanu Reeves and his flat valley boy voice on TV the other day. I’d recommend this movie to any of fellow Wow readers ; )
I hope 2014 is good for you Mr. Wow. I read Liz Smith’s column daily and appreciate your major contributions! I will be finishing my final semester for my MFA in Upper MI where it is very cold and snowy…who knows? Maybe I will meet a Thoreau thinking gardener who looks like a young Rock Hudson ; )

    8:22 am | December 27, 2013
  • Mr. Wow

Dear Rick…thanks.  Who is Liz Smith?  (I have to say that.)

I agree that Sirk is way ahead of his time in “All That Heaven Allows.”  Aren’t the “children” ghastly?  (Just “ghaasstly!” as Gloria Upson would say.)   And Hudson developed a sure stature.  He was excellent in “Giant” and despite the silly “age” makeup of that era, Taylor was marvelous, and better in the latter part of the film, playing a woman of fifty. (She was still only 24!)

Good luck w your MFA.  I wouldn’t mind being somewhere cold and snowy.  I like that!  As a kid I loved the sultry summers.  Now, they are an agony.   And good luck on tending to your garden, honey.    Happy New Year!

Rick–P.S.  My favorite “A Christmas Carol” is the 1984 George C. Scott version for TV.  Wonderful in every way and I still sob uncontrollable sentimental tears as it ends.

(You should see me when the boy has to kill his deer in “The Yearling.”  My face is purple from crying!–I promise myself I won’t, but…)

    • rick gould

      Thanks, Mr. Wow ; )
I  admire the George C. Scott version, too. He was a fine, ferocious Scrooge and the scene with David Warner as Bob Cratchett trying to be brave for his family and wife (wonderful Susannah York) after Tiny Tim dies just melts me!
As for Rock and Liz, I thought their performances as middle-aged parents were totally natural, compared to Dean’s mid-life theatrics. I always thought Leslie Benedict was the closest to Elizabeth Taylor’s real life personality–outspoken, liberal, motherly, sharp-tongued, looking out for the underdog. The scene where she tells off Rock’s character after getting shushed during “men’s talk” always reminds me of when she publicly told John Warner off during a discussion of women in the military ; )
I watched Auntie Mame on TCM during the holidays…Rosalind Russell always reminded me of my Aunt Audrey, who reminded me of both Roz and Mame…
Loved looking at your holiday pix, love your glasses, too ; )

      10:51 pm | December 27, 2013
      • Mr. Wow

“Okay, now–is everybody lit?”    Ah, “Auntie Mame.”  Never grows old for me.

I thought James Dean was pretty bad through all of “Giant.”  His performances–all three films–don’t really hold up.  So twitchy and ultra-sensitive and screaming The Method!   Rock and (especially) Liz act rings around him.   And yes, Leslie Benedict has many elements of the real lady.  Then again, so does the mad, bawdy wife in “X Y and Zee.”

These are actually old glasses I dug out of a draw a few months ago when I lost my “regular” old glasses.   Yes, I lost them staggering home drunk.  (I think I elaborated on that in “Wasting Away In Margaritaville–Again”)   These are nice.  I need a newer pair.  The lenses are pretty cloudy and I might want the frame just a tad smaller.

        Happy New Year!  Health!!!

I caught Christmas in Connecticut which is a great movie. My personal favorite is The Bishop’s Wife which I caught twice this year. When Dudley refills the sherry decanter again and again, well, he’s my kind of angel. And he’s very helpful when it comes time to trim the tree.

Dear haunted One…I love “Christmas in Connecticut.”   Another one they show a lot around this time is “In The Good Old Summertime” (the movie ends at Christmas.) Judy and Van Johnson. It’s adorable, and the final scene between Judy and Van is sooo sweet and always makes me mist up a bit. (I am a big waterworks factory over certain movies.)

  • Mr. Wow, what great Christmas photos!  The tree looks wonderful… the cats look wonderful… YOU look wonderful!  Thanks for sharing your Christmas cheer… this year I only managed to do the outside of the house because that’s the part people see.  The inside, well… that’s another story.  Too many distractions this year.  NEXT year we should be in a new place and hope to have friends over… and that means I will have to get serious about my decorating!

Happy 2014 to you and B.  Will you be counting down with us here?  Or out at Times Square?

Dear Lila, I will be here and counting on seeing your decorations next year.

I’ll be at home New Years Eve. I did Times Square only once, back in the 70s.  It was a madhouse, fun, and that was before they cordoned everybody off.  So it was really a mass of seething, groping humanity.  But once was enough.  Now we have a bit of champagne, roll our eyes over the spectacle that in “journalist” Anderson Cooper and “comedian” Cathy Griffin, and retire at a reasonable hour.

Hope your 2014 is blessed with health, health, health.  Happiness?  What’s happy?  Being healthy!

Mr. Wow, you are one monstrously attractive man! Good lord, just look at you!!!  The fact that you evidently now have no (or very few) qualms about posting pics of yourself is a pretty good indication of where your head’s at, and it certainly seems to be better off than it has been in quite some time.

A rousing “huzzah!” is aimed in your direction as we speak. All the best in 2014 to you and B.

    12:22 pm | December 28, 2013
    • Mr. Wow

Dear Rude…thank you, first of all.  Second, the only reason I never posted pix before (I did last year, actually, on my 60th birthday) was more a matter of professional worries.  I don’t have them anymore.  That is, I don’t work for much $ and also pretty much everybody knows my working backstory.  My boss actually “outed” me–in all good intention. There was worry I’d been swept away in Hurricane Sandy.

For many years I really loved having my picture taken, and B. obliged me.  (I guess in my head he was Milton Greene and I was MM. Lots of nudes.)   But in recent years, I’ve seen that the camera does not remain your friend forever.  So, when I do pose I try to make sure I’m always smiling.  Years ago I had a handsome “brooding” look I’d employ.  That just makes  me look tired now.  The camera catches what the eye doesn’t see.   But you are sweet.

I certainly feel great this week.  Sooooooo relaxed.  I suppose I’ll be glad to get back to work, but I hope this long hiatus from margaritaville makes me a bit stronger when tempted. (The place is right downstairs, and I have a weak will.)

Happy New you to you, too!!

    Dec 29, 2013

It’s not quite New Year’s Eve, but I have been chilled–more so than when I wrote the above post–at what “Duck Dynasty” revealed, and how this level of hatred was just waiting for GLAAD to make what might indeed be its final misstep.   I’ve railed against this organization for years, feeling they were too concerned with cheap publicity, too wedded to gangster tactics, too utterly clueless to how times may have ‘a changed, but deep-seated hatred and bigotries remain blazingly intact. No, they were too busy gushing over Anderson Cooper and boycotting bakeries that wouldn’t make cakes for same-sex weddings.

I feel somehow, terribly, that this is just the beginning. Hoist with their own petard, GLAAD has opened the floodgates for “Christians” to openly declare their seething fears and ugly intentions.   I suppose I am over-influenced at the moment because I’ve just read a terrifying–and to me, entirely plausible–novel, “Christian Nation.” (The premise– what could have happened if John McCain had won the election, then died, passing the presidency to Sarah Palin? Result–theocracy.)

Significant moments in history are often sparked by what appear to be insignificant events.  What could be more insignificant than the ignorant words of the redneck star of a TV reality program?  Time magazine has now chimed in, declaring an “expiration date” on GLAAD. (Alas, the writer of the piece thinks GLAAD is no longer necessary because there’s no need for it–no need for gays to be fighting back against defamation! Wow, everything went right over this guy’s head. The thing is, we shouldn’t fight against “defamation,” we should fight for equal rights. That’s where GLAAD eventually missed the boat.)

I find no satisfaction in this “the Emperor has no clothes” scenario.  Under the exasperation expressed above, was a real fear; I could see Phil Robertson being un-suspended…I could see GLAAD humbled…I could read every hateful comment posted online, jubilantly exhorting Christ to “obliterate” us.   And it came to pass–it was already steamrolling when I posted.

It doesn’t help that for all his good intentions Obama has been a weak president–for whatever reason, he has been weak.  There will a Republican in the White for sure in 2016. (If Hillary Clinton cared for her country more than her own “legacy” she’d be supporting/grooming suitable Democrats to run in two years.  She will never be president.)    I know one side or the other always turns to extremes–to camps and arrests and liberties stripped–when the “other” side wins.  And what generally happens?  Not much.  Certainly nobody is dragged off or their rights hampered in an Orwellian fashion.   But suddenly for the first time, I can’t laugh off my own over-the-top imaginings of the next decade.

I wish I was much older. There are things I’d rather not live through. Maybe on Jan 1st I’ll laugh over this gloomy rumination.      That would be good. Maybe.

    10:34 am | December 29, 2013
  • Mr. Wow, OMG – a Palin presidency – this is why, as disappointed as I am with Obama’s performance, I still believe voting to keep Palin as far away from the WH as possible was the right thing to do.  As Orwellian as things are at the moment… I can only imagine a sort of Orwellian -Inquisition hybrid if certain ultraconservatives had their way.  I would absolutely pop smoke and flee the country if it came to pass.

Sadly, some Americans HAVE been dragged off in near-Orwellian fashion.  All that is necessary is to wave the word “terrorism” (or “drugs”) around a bit and all those pesky Constitutional rights go right out the window.  Forced cavity searches without a warrant, “no-knock” warrants that enable SWAT teams to break down your door, shoot your dogs, handcuff you and ransack your house… mistakenly, oops, we only did that for your own good…, or being hauled off an airplane and strip-searched for a few hours because your cafe-au-lait skin color scared some still-unidentified nervous nelly on the plane.  Property, to include big stuff like homes and vehicles, are routinely seized and sold by the USG for drug allegations, no proof of guilt or due process required (NC is the ONLY state that requires an actual conviction before you lose your property).  And the NSA collecting everything on everyone… WTF??!  Yeah, there is a LOT wrong these days.

As for the theocratic hate-mongers, no surprise there.  I WAS a bit surprised that businesses like Cracker Barrel, which initially responded to the outcry of the voices of decency and pulled Duck merchandise off their shelves, changed their tune in response to the counter-outcry of those who (wrongly) claimed that poor Phil Robertson was being denied his 1st Amendment rights.  Pffft.  The 1st protects our free speech against government interference.  It does NOT protect us from social backlash against our stupidest or most hateful remarks.  Cracker Barrel has shown its true colors, the gray and green of the Almighty Dollar.
